Now that the Fright Night Film Fest has passed, our celebration of John Carpenter has come to end – an end that is until we make the trip out to see The Ward at the theater when it comes to North Carolina. This week we thought we’d get back to the basics with one of Streebo’s favorite directors – the Mexican Madman himself – Guillermo Del Toro and his first American studio effort! Mimic tells the story of Dr. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) and her quest to stop the genetically altered super insects she created to that have gone on a mission to destroy humanity!
(Watch the movie online after the leap!)
Mimic was Del Toro’s first American release and was also his first time butting heads with American studios. Del Toro learned the hard way that the saying “I fought the law and the law won” is more than just a clever lyric in this country as studios forced re-shoots on him. The new scene explained away the mysteries of the world that Del Toro tried so hard to keep creepy and mysterious.
Despite the fact that Del Toro was disappointed with the results of Mimic – the movie received positive reviews including two thumbs up from Siskel & Ebert and has gone on to gain a small following on DVD and home video. Del Toro is well known for providing extra features on his DVD collections even going so far as to record multiple commentary tracks on movies like The Devil’s Backbone and Hellboy, Mimic only existed on a bare bones DVD edition. According to the director himself – Del Toro disowned his work on Mimic all due to the forced re-shoots.
Del Toro fans may now rejoice as the studios have decided to release Mimic on blu ray and Del Toro has returned to do commentary tracks and behind the scenes features. The Mimic blu ray is slated for an Sept. 27th, 2011 street date.
So what are you waiting for? It’s Saturday and there’s an awesome horror movie waiting for you to watch it! Right now. Online. For free! It’s Scary Movie Saturday!
(Note: If you want to watch the movie – it’s best to watch it the same day that I put up the links – because Youtube has a nasty habit of deleting everything without a moment’s notice.)
I love that film so much. A true classic!
It’s an underrated gem for sure! I can’t wait for the Blu Ray. I hope Best Buy puts it on the cheap!
