Tony Scott leaves behind Mammoth Movie Legacy, Scanners & Altered States Double Feature at Retrofantasma, and more on Mutantville Mondays!

True Romance (1993)

I awoke this morning to see the shocking news that one of my all time favorite film directors – Tony Scott – had committed suicide by leaping from a LA bridge yesterday. Until the recent release of Prometheus by his brother Ridley – Tony Scott was my favorite of the two Scott brothers – having released many of my favorite films from the past three decades. When I was younger I enjoyed the pop action sensibilities of films like Top Gun, Revenge, The Last Boy Scout, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State and many more. Our condolences go out to his family and friends in their time of need.

As my taste in films became more refined – I gravitated toward Scott’s more artsy projects like The Hunger and the pop-drenched action-er True Romance. Scott had become a director that I could trust to deliver a quality movie every time out the gate – whether it was a project or genre I was familiar with or not. Over the years, Scott helped feed my imagination and my drive to be a storyteller which has lead me to filmmaking. His influence on myself and many others is quit simply immeasurable. True Romance was a movie that informed my own anarchic romanticized notions of the world and helped me through many a dark night. For his contributions to cinema and the MVP imagination fund – MVP salutes the great Tony Scott. You will be missed – but your work will live forever.

This weekend, make the trip to Durham for a sweet double feature of David Cronenberg’s Scanners and Ken Russell’s Altered States at the Carolina Theatre this Friday at 7pm. With the recent release of Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond the Black Rainbow – I often found myself comparing his work to both Scanners and Altered States. With Beyond the Black Rainbow still playing in select theaters – now seems like the perfect time to take in this mindmelting melange of madness from Cronenberg, Russell and Cosmatos. I enjvy those of you in the Raleigh/Durham area that can easily make the trip to the Carolina Theatre to enjoy these events. Sadly, Streebo has to work through the weekend and is going to miss what might be his only chance to see these classics in the theater. Life will go on – but for the next week – it goes on begrudgingly. If you make it to the show – be sure to tell Jim and the gang at Retrofantasma “hello” for me. I hope to see them all soon as the Retrofantasma Fall/Winter 2012 lineup is nothing less than spectacular.

MVP continued the track toward completing the historic first episode of Muticia’s Movie Morgue. The episode is coming together nicely and only lacks a few essential CG elements and graphics before we give it the final audio mix, wipe it’s butt and chop the horns off! From there – it’s just a hop, skip and a jump over to Youtube where Muticia will be available to the world.
