The Halloween season is off to a bang as Charlotte filmmakers come out in full force this month starting with the premiere of Thorin Thompson’s Portrait For Hell which screens this Saturday and Sunday at 7pm at the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte. Portait For Hell was co-written by Thompson and make-up FX artist Hannah Jet King, features paintings by Katherine Blackwell and stars Michelle Harkness, Berry Newkirk, and Jonathan Elliot Coarsey. Local painter and filmmaker join forces to create a horrific work of cinema. Thorin Thompson, a graduate of Full Sail University was inspired by the mind-bending artwork of Katherine Blackwell. The two collaborated and Katherine began work on a portrait upon which the film was based. Thorin then partnered with special effects makeup artist Hanna Jett King to write the screenplay and production began in March, 2010. The entire film was shot in and around the Carolinas and cast and crewed with local talent from the Charlotte area. After several long months of filming and many hours of post production the film is now complete and ready to premiere!
Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte proudly presents Portrait for Hell on October 15th and 16th for an evening of visual and cinema graphic art. Doors open at 7pm, screening will begin promptly at 8pm. Please join us for this two night event — artist, cast, and crew will be in attendance. The premiere will feature a gallery of Katherine Blackwell’s artwork as well as a “Talk Back” session with the cast and crew after the viewing. This is your opportunity to learn more about local film production.

Synopsis:
Starring MICHELLE HARKNESS as Katie Blackwell, a well-to-do- landscape artist, and BERRY NEWKIRK (Voted Charlotte’s Best Actor 2011) as her husband, Will. When the couple moves into their first home, life appears to be on track until terrifying nightmares and violent hauntings leave the two at odds with one another. Katie soon finds herself obsessed with a grotesque portrait she began whilst asleep and is now compelled to complete.
Meanwhile, her husband, now concerned with his wife’s unhealthy obsession, decides to investigate the matter. With the help of his friend, Howard [JONATHAN ELLIOTT COARSEY], they unravel a macabre mystery spanning over a century!
Can knowledge of the truth be enough to stop Katie from painting a PORTRAIT FOR HELL?
