In honor of this year’s Fright Night Film Fest, I’ve decided to highlight House of 1000 Corpses which features Sid Haig. Sid Haig will be a guest at Fright Night Film Fest this year along with many others. Check out the link above to see the huge list of celebrities attending. As many of you know House of 1000 Corpses was released in 2003 and was written and directed by Rob Zombie. I remember friends talking about this movie years before it was ever released. Since Rob Zombie was so well known for his music, White Zombie (no classic horror movie reference there) and later solo career, many people talked about the fact that he’d written a horror movie and was trying to get the financing together. Then there were tales that it was too horrific and that the studios wouldn’t let him do it so he had to go somewhere else, etc… In reality, I’m not sure how much of that is true and how much is urban legend (although growing up in Albemarle, it may be referred to as rural legend).
My research shows that it helped that Rob Zombie had directed some of White Zombie’s music videos and helped out on Beavis and Butthead Do America. A big thing that also seemed to help is the fact that he designed a haunted maze attraction for Universal Studios which helped build a relationship with them. A little bit of trivia here…Bill Moseley presented an award to Rob Zombie in 1999 for his design of the attraction. This brought a lot of people into the parks and earning money for the studios is never a bad thing.

House of 1000 Corpses was green lighted by the studio, given a 25 day shooting schedule and a budget of $3-4 million but ended up costing $7 million. The film grossed $16,829,545 worldwide. The sad thing is they never show the DVD dollar amounts in these figures. I know many people that own this and I’m sure it’s done quite well on DVD.
The film stars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Karen Black, William Bassett, Rain Wilson and Sheri Moon Zombie (Sheri Moon at the time). This movie is about 2 teenage couples that are traveling across rural Texas looking for urban legends. They end up meeting Captain Spaulding which leads them to meet a weird backwoods sadistic family of serial killers. From there…the fun ensues.
Speaking of fun, it’s time for some videos!
Here is a clip with Sid Haig…aka Captain Spaulding.
