Panels involve multiple professionals, in moderated discussions on various topics that will allow for questions and answers at the end.
Academic Credibility for Speculative Fiction: Let’s face it, in literary circles the wondrous realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror have often been seen as the ugly ducklings of writing. Over time, some serious inroads have been made helping to elevate the way speculative fiction is viewed in comparison with other genres. Increasing numbers of professors, academicians, and teachers have taken up the cause of promoting the serious literary value of speculative fiction. In this panel, we feature a discussion on this very pursuit, by panelists who are professors and teachers on the college level.
Adapting from the Page to the Screen, and from the Screen to the Page: This panel explores adaptations and novelizations. What are the challenges involved in making a book into a movie? What are the main considerations in novelizations? This panel will explore the hurdles of bringing a story across the boundaries of two very different mediums.
All About Agents: When do you need an agent? How do you determine whether one is legimate, or good for you? What do they do? This panel explores the world of agents, and answers many important questions for writers mulling over getting one.
Animals in Speculative Fiction: The title says it all! Animals are used very extensively in speculative fiction, with portrayals ranging from the magical to the mundane. This panel will feature a fun discussion on the use of animals in speculative fiction, and what their presence can bring to a story.
Anthologies: What makes a good anthology? What are some approaches editors take in deciding what kinds of stories to put in one? How can they help a writer get on the map? This panel discussion will probe the topic of anthologies, as well as single-author collections.
Author’s Collectives: There is always strength in cooperation, and in today’s difficult publishing environment, many creative author’s collectives have formed to help writers sell books and raise awareness of their work. Visit with some active author’s collectives such as Imagicopter and the Literary Underworld, and find out how author’s collectives can be extremely helpful to writers of all levels.
BDSM in Fiction: It is a whole lot more than just whips and chains, and it appears in a lot more speculative ficiton than you might think (Terry Goodkind’s Mord Sith, anyone?). Come for a discussion on dominant-submissive relationships in fiction, and the art of crafting engaging, believable characters involved in these types of relationships. This might be one of the more interesting panels in all of Fandom Fest!
Blogging: From personal blogs to themed blogs, blogging can really be a good outlet for writers. This panel features a discussing of blogging as a whole, including those who do personal blogs, to others who have professional ones.
Cover Art-A Book Is Judged By Its Cover: Come and meet some professional cover artists, and listen to them talk about their approach and methods for creating the look of a new book release. In a visual world, presentation becomes very important, and with books the cover artist’s role is crucial!
Crafting a Series or Franchise Character: Whether you are writing a dedicated series, or perhaps a group of books featuring a heroic, franchise-type character, there are some extra things to ponder as you go about your work. This panel features authors of both kinds, who will explore the additional things that need to be kept in mind when writing several books that have a core connection.
Creating and Finding Writing Opportunities: With new media, magazines, zines, blogs, and so much more out there, there are lots of opportunities for writers to find paying work while they work on their novels and short stories. In this panel, hear from a group of writers with an extensive amount of insight and experience in this area.
Do Publishers Matter in the Digital Age? It is a provocative question, and this special presentation by Debra Dixon of Bell Bridge Books explores the place of publishers in the future, when the fast-growing world of digital publishing will undoubtedly be predominant. Are publishers necessary? Why shouldn’t everyone just self-publish? These questions and more are explored in a panel highly relevant to the publishing world of today and the near future.
Edibles and Accessories in the Erotic Scene: Sometimes bringing in some outside elements can make an erotic scene sizzle, in any genre. This panel will explore various accessories, along with some “show and tell”, and a discussion of the usage of edible items, to help you find the ingredients to make your scene scintillating. This special, extended panel will be part of the later evening programming, for our adult audience!
Editors-Expectations and Etiquette: Want to get some advice about how to approach an editor? How to best work with one? What they typically want out of writers? Then this is the panel for you, featuring several editors who will share their real world experience in a way that will help writers have a better relationship with the editors that they encounter and work with.
Erotic Writing: Whether you are writing erotic fiction, or want to spice up your intimate scenes in other genres, this is the panel for you! This panel will explore the intriguing topic of writing effective erotic scenes and what elements are involved.
Everything You Wanted to Know About eBooks: A comprehensive overview of the world of eBooks, from the formats, to the readers, to the markets. This panel will help you understand the digital publishing realm a little better, and give you some leads to follow if you are interested in seeing your work in eBook formats.
Exploring the World of Children’s Books: Come and explore the world of children’s books, with authors who have successful titles in this area. Find out about the unique challenges and approaches involved in developing children’s books.
Faith-Based Fiction: In this panel, the world of faith-based fiction will be explored. What are the boundaries? How does a faith-based writer engage readers that do not share the writer’s beliefs? What are the trends in faith-based literature at the moment?
Fight Scenes in Fiction: This panel will explore advice on how to write a compelling and effective fight scene, no matter what genre you are writing in.
The Foundations of Good Publishing-For Small Press and Self-Published Authors: What makes for a good product? What is important to keep in mind to give your book the best chance at success? What are the biggest challenges to putting out a good title? This panel explores the things that make for a successful publication. A small press or self-published title really can match the quality of a major press release!
Heroic Characters: From Joseph Campbell to Christopher Vogler, many have studied the elements of the heroic, as the hero in literature has always held a strong attraction for readers. What makes a character heroic? What are the techniques and considerations in creating a hero in your short story or novel? This panel is all about the crafting of a character with heroic qualities, from those who have done it.
Horror Writing-Realistic Character Development and Other Considerations: There are some definite considerations to keep in mind when writing in the horror genre. Developing realistic characters in a horror novel has its own hurdles due to the genre itself. If you are a horror writer or just curious about the genre, this panel will explore the unique genre considerations.
Imagicopter-An Introduction: Come and find out more about Imagicopter, a collection of authors, artists, musicians, and others who come together to do events and raise awareness about their work. From special events, to book fairs, to book stores, to conventions, Imagicopter participates in an array of activities. They even produce their own magazine, Imagyro! Come and meet the founder, as well as the managing editor of Imagyro, and learn how you can become a part of Imagicopter!
Introducing Some Up and Coming Faces in Speculative Fiction: During Fandom Fest, you will be introduced to some very talented new writers at the various book launch parties being held in regular programming. Fandom Fest seeks to spotlight and introduce newer talent as much as possible, so we put this panel in place to give you a heads-up on some very talented authors that you might not have heard about yet. Come meet some great talents early so you can say you “met them when!”
Keeping Genre Writing Fresh: Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies: Let’s face it, there are a whole lot of books and stories out there with vampires, werewolves, and zombies. How do you keep these creatures from becoming repetitive, when there are certain expectations to begin with? This panel will explore the art of keeping familiar genre creatures from getting stale.
Literary Track Meet and Greet: This will be the first panel at Fandom Fest. Come and meet the Literary Track Staff, get acquainted with some of the panelists and participants in the track, and get yourself ready for a great adventure in writing and publishing over the wekeend!
Literary Underworld: In this panel, you will get to meet the founder of the Literary Underworld as well as several authors who participate in this innovative author’s collective that helps authors sell their work. From an online store to exhibits at conventions, The Literary Underworld showcases and sells quality speculative ficition titles.
Meet the Publishers Session I: Come and meet five different publishers, learn what kind of books they publish, their histories, how they have grown, and what they look for. This is one of three sessions showcasing small press publishers.

Mystery Writing: Elements of mystery are not just for books of the mystery genre! This panel features several authors discussing the techniques and approaches to writing a good mystery, and the elements involved.
The Paranormal in Fiction: From romance to urban fantasy, to medieval fantasy and horror, the presence of the paranormal has taken on an increasing role in the stories being published today. This panel probes the topic of the paranormal in fiction of any genre. What falls under this label? How is it being used in various types of books, and what are its strengths and potential weaknesses?
Plot Development: This panel will feature a discussion on effective plot development. How should you go about constructing a good plot? What are some elements of a compelling plot? What are some examples?
Podcasting and Radio: While there are some unique considerations for both podcasting and producing radio shows, there is also a lot of common ground. Come and learn more about the art and science of creating a quality broadcast show. What makes a show compelling and successful? How do you grow an audience? Those are just a couple of the questions that will be explored.
Poetry and Song in Fiction: Poetry and song play a big part in fiction, as any reader of Lord of the Rings or other great works have discovered. What are some of the ways that writers can work poems and songs into their novels and short stories? How can a poem or song enhance a scene? Join this discussion and find out.
Point of View: This panel will explore effective ways for writers to use point of view. Some writers change points of view between large sections, while others have been known to change it in consecutive paragraphs. What works? What can be confusing? Visit this panel and find out!
Public Relations and Marketing on the Small Press and Self-Published Level: So you don’t have much money, and the burden of promotion falls heavily on you. What can you do to raise awareness of your work without having to spend much money? This panel will explore low-cost and no-cost ways to do effective marketing and public relations for your books. A valuable panel for small press publishers as well as authors.
Publishing Nightmares: Yes, we’ve heard the horror stories, but there are some general things to be aware of and look out for if you are aspiring to be published. This panel will explore the dangers of the publishing world, including vanity presses. This panel is a must for every writer looking to be published.
Pulp Fiction-And This Isn’t About the Movie: The Pulp era of the 20th century was fertile ground for the genesis of many areas of speculative fiction, and included many legendary writers. This panel explores the history of the Pulp Era, and you will get to visit with some writers who produce work in the tradition of the Pulp Era today!
Putting the Science in Science Fiction, and Keeping Ahead of the Present: This panel explores the fine art of putting hard science into science fiction, and how to do it effectively. How do you avoid big info dumps? How do you keep ahead of present technology? There are lots of challenges in this area, and our panelists will confront them head on!
Screenwriting: This panel explores the world of screenplays. What makes a good screenplay? What are the big differences in writing approaches between screenplays and novels/short stories? What are the markets like for screenplays? This panel will be a nice overview for the writer of short stories and novels who is looking to write (or write better) screenplays.
Shopping Your First Novel: This panel explores the challenges faced by a new writer shopping their first novel. It will take into consideration types of publishers, agents, and the best way to present new work. A very valuable discussion for aspiring writers.
Small Press-Pro’s and Con’s: This panel will give you a nice overview of small press publishers, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. What are the strengths of small press? What are its weaknesses? Where do small press publishers fit in within the publishing world of 2011? You might be very surprised to find out just how important small press publishers are becoming!
Steampunk: Here’s a panel on a red-hot area of speculative fiction with something for those unfamiliar with it, as well as something for those active in it. What is Steampunk? What’s new in Steampunk? Will it retain its popularity? Join us for a discussion about these questions and more!
Techniques for Good Short Fiction: Short stories are not the same thing as novels. With much smaller word counts (and often very strict ones for anthologies), you have to keep certain things in mind as you craft a short story. This panel explores the techniques and approaches for writing compelling and effective short fiction.
Trends in Erotic Fiction: What’s heating up the genre at the moment? What lies ahead? We can’t go into too many details here, as the conversation in this panel is probably going to be a little risque. Our panelists will talk about the topics heating up erotic fiction at the moment, elements of which might be very usable in any genre! Like a couple of other topics, this one will be part of our later evening programming, for our adult audience.
Trends in Fantasy: This will be a fascinating forum taking a look at where fantasy is right now, and what might be just around the corner. What have publishers been buying? What has been selling well? What is growing fast, and what is slowing down? Come here to find out!
Urban Fantasy-Can You Definite It?: This panel explores the world of Urban Fantasy, taking a look at how to define it, what trends are occuring within it, and what areas of it are popular at the moment.
Where First Time Novelists Go Wrong: This panel is very valuable for unpublished authors, as it will explore the common mistakes that first time novelists tend to make. Save yourself some time and frustration if you are a first time novelist by coming to this panel!
Writer’s Groups: Writer’s Groups can really damage an aspiring writer, or they can be incredibly helpful. This panel will help you evaluate whether you are in a Writer’s Group that will be beneficial to you. What do you look for in a good writer’s group? What are some red flags to look out for?
Writing Compelling Characters: A discussion with several published authors about what’s involved in writing an interesting, dimensional character.
Writing Fan Fiction: Lots of writers create stories set within the worlds of major franchises that they are fans of, like Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Middle Earth. This panel explores the realm of fan fiction, why writers spend the time to create it (when it can’t be sold).
Writing For Graphic Novels: This panel will explore the world of graphic novels from a writer’s perpsective. What is the process like? How is it different than writing novels or short stories?
Writing in Someone Else’s World: Lots of opportunities exist for writers to create everything from novels to short stories based in a pre-existing world. From game systems to franchises, writers can be highly successful playing in someone else’s world! Come and find out how writers maintain their own voice and identity when working within a world that was not of their making.

There is no formula for making a good opening, but there are a few concepts worth bearing in mind, as well as a number of approaches one might choose to avoid. Gary Wedlund contends that well written openings are a matter of tending a host of fires, and the real issue isn’t finding that perfect first line, but instead, fitting all that needs done within your most precious space. Those who attend are asked to e-mail a sample of their first page, to be handed back at the seminar opening. (Those who email are guaranteed a space in this limited session).

A special seminar presented by Maura Heaphy, senior lecturer at Ohio State University and author of 100 Most Popular Science Fiction Authors: Biographical Sketches and Bibliographies, and Science Fiction Authors: A Research Guide. This seminar looks into the foundation of literary works in science fiction that become classics, or have an enduring legacy. A great seminar if you would like to learn about the history of science fiction, from its earliest days until now.
