Final Destination 5 Dies at B.O. and Freddy Krueger slashes up Mortal Kombat on Mutantville Mondays!

We had a busy weekend aboard the Mutantville Mothership this weekend. We moved several projects through various stages of production and had a blast doing it. We’re gearing up to get Tales From Mutantville onto DVD and Blu Ray as well as putting the final touches on G.H.O.S.T. to get it ready for the Fall. Lots of fun things are coming down the pipe for MVP and we thank you all for being a part of it!

FINAL DESTINATION 5 STALLS AT BOX OFFICE GATES!!!

The horror season is off to a slow start as Final Destination 5 stalls at the box office gates this weekend with a lowly take of $18 million.  Still, $18 million is better than the $11 million that Grindhouse gained during it’s entire theatrical run so perhaps third place at the box office is not necessarily so bad.  The movie is out late in the Summer season but early enough in the fall season to still be lurking in theaters and dollar theaters come Halloween.  This Halloween season is packed as each weekend becomes a battleground for the horror top spot with Fright Night coming this week, followed by Red State, Apollo 18, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Paranormal Activity 3 over the coming months.

From BoxOfficeMojo:

“In third place, death started to overtake the Final Destination franchise, which showed an opening decline for the first time. Final Destination 5 drew an estimated $7.3 million on close to 4,600 screens at 3,155 locations, and an estimated 76 percent of the gross was from 3D presentations on 2,800 screens at 2,515 locations. Predecessor The Final Destination, also in 3D, debuted to $10.8 million in Aug. 2009 (leading to a $27.4 million weekend). If FD5 follows a similar trajectory as FD4, it would wind up with around $18.5 million for the weekend, which would slot just below the first movie as the franchise’s least-attended start.”

VIDEO GAME HORROR!!!

One, two, Freddy’s coming to your XBOX!  I never thought I would say these words, but the makers of MORTAL KOMBAT just released downloadable content with the slasher King himself – Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare On Elm Street.  It’s true you can now fight your favorite Mortal Kombat characters such as Liu Kang and Johnny Cage with your favorite slasher Freddy Krueger.

From FEARnet:

“The plot getting Freddy into the Mortal Kombat tournament is threadbare and more than a little silly.  Shao Kahn encounters Krueger in the Dream Realm and, knowing that he can’t defeat Krueger on his home turf, drags him out into the Earthrealm to finish him off.  It’s contrived and silly, but then again, this is a game that features characters made out of blood and cybernetic ninjas.”

ROB ZOMBIE TEASES FANS ON FACEBOOK!!!

“What the hell is going on now at THE LORDS OF SALEM SFX Shop? Each day is stranger the the last.”
Rob Zombie released an exclusive production still from the set of Lords of Salem to his Facebook page.  Over the past few months, Zombie has leaked photos of props and posters but todays image featured what can only be described as a little person getting cast in plaster.  Oh the things that whacky Rob Zombie does to entertain his fans.  Check out the photo below:

MAINSTREAM MARKET GETTING VIOLENT!!

This weekend marks the third tentpole movie of 2012 that has been shutdown in pre-production.  The first casualty was Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower followed by Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of H.P.Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness starring Tom Cruise – and now with the lukewarm box office of Cowboys vs Aliens the studios have pulled the plug on the $200 million dollar Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski take on The Lone RangerDeadline.com broke the story of the halt put on The Lone Ranger and shocked everyone.  What does this mean for the mainstream when they are pulling the plug on so many big properties that could have reaped great rewards for them?  I say that it opens the door for a nice little independent film to come in through the back door and steal all of the thunder from the big studios.  Here’s to hoping.

HORROR ON DVD!!!

The live action adaptation of the hit manga Priest hits DVD and Blu Ray this week on August 16th.

From Amazon.com

What’s harder to kill than a vampire? The thriving vampire movie genre, which reappears here in the form of Priest, an entertaining mash-up of sci-fi, horror, and various Westerns adapted from a graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung and starring Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code, Creation, Iron Man, etc.) in the title role. In Hyung’s world (as depicted by screenwriter Cory Goodman and director Scott Charles Stewart), the future is a dystopian nightmare still reeling from centuries of conflict between humans and vast armies of slimy, humanoid vampires; having been saved (or so we’re told) by fierce and noble warrior priests, people now live in a great, grim city that makes the Los Angeles depicted in Bladerunner look like a vacation resort, while the remaining vampires have been consigned to “reservations” in the desert. A few hardy souls subsist out in the barren wilderness as well, and the fun starts when a gang of vamps attacks one family, abducting pretty young Lucy (Lily Collins, Phil’s daughter) and killing her parents. The girl’s sharpshooting boyfriend (Cam Gigandet) seeks out Bettany’s retired Priest, who’s only too willing to defy the dire warnings of the arrogant clergymen who control the cities, jump on his supercycle, and head out to do battle with a foe that, far from being defeated, has been regrouping and now plans to–gasp!–lay waste to all mankind. A couple of twists involving central characters are eventually revealed, but the best parts are the action sequences in the vampires’ enormous “hive,” aboard (and on top of) a speeding train, and elsewhere as the Priest and a few of his cross-bearing (on their foreheads, that is) comrades, including action veteran Maggie Q, try to stop the head vampire dude (basically a fanged version of Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name) and his ravenous minions. Considering the range of 21st-century vampire flicks, from the arty Swedish import Let the Right One In to the romantic Twilight series, there’s plenty of room for a popcorn chewer like Priest. –Sam Graham
