As I was driving through Anson County, NC last weekend, I couldn’t help but think of Evil Dead 2. After all, that’s where it was filmed. The Color Purple was also filmed in Wadesboro and nearby Lilesville. Obviously these films are slightly different but still cool for a small town like Wadesboro, NC (census of 2010, there were 5,780 people). The main set for Evil Dead 2 was built inside the gymnasium at JR Faison Junior High School.
Evil Dead 2 was written and directed by Sam Raimi. It was also written by Scott Spiegel. It stars…you guessed it, Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Ted Raimi, Denise Bixler and Scott Spiegel as one of the “fake Shemps.” For those of you who may not be familiar with this term, be ready for a slight tangent.
Fake Shemp? How about a trailer?…Click Continue Reading!
In 1955 Shemp Howard, from The Three Stooges, died suddenly of a heart attack. When he passed away, the remaining Stooges needed to finish 4 short films. Because of budget cuts they were forced to use of stock footage from completed shorts they already had finished. When they did shoot new footage they needed someone to be a “fake Shemp.” So they would get a body double to stand in and they would film them from behind. We’ve used this technique at Mutantville as well. I’ve been a fake Shemp on more than one occassion myself. Although my hands have been used in a few movies so that helps my credits as a hand model!
We now rejoin our Evil Dead 2 discussion, already in progress. So you may be asking, “What is the movie about?” It’s about a guy named Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) that takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin. He plays this tape recorded message from a professor reciting a passage from the Book of the Dead. This calls up an evil force which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite and tries to do the same to Ash. Others come to help. What will happen next?
