This past weekend (June 3 – 5th, 2011), ConCarolinas held it’s tenth annual convention in Charlotte. The featured guests included Harry Turtledove, Conor McCullagh, Brinke Stevens, Addy Miller of The Walking Dead and the cast & crew of Ghost Trek.
The Mutantville Players have attended ConCarolinas for the past six years in a row. Last year was our first time submitting one of our short films – Devil Comes Down – to the film festival. This year marked our first appearance as guests at the convention. Charlotte has been home to the Mutantville Mothership for years – and we were proud to attend a con on our native soil. We had plenty of friends come out to show support and built several new friendships along the way.
Friday night, MVP hosted an evening of horror which consisted of the trailer for G.H.O.S.T., Be There In Ten (from UK filmmaker Tom Young), Devil Comes Down and the Charlotte premiere of Respawner The Web Series Pilot episode. We were blessed to have a nice turnout of convention goers as well as several friends of Mutantville including our sometimes partner in celluloid crime Robert W. Filion, our colleague Fred from Carolina Filmworks, Alan Whitley and the decidedly deadly duo of Meggerz and Morgan. The crowd seemed pleased by the night of films including one fan who went on to proclaim that “Respawner was the greatest movie ever made!”
Saturday was a long and grueling day as Streebo participated in several panels throughout the day – only breaking away in time to make it to the film festival where MVP’s Scarecrow At Midnight was playing with several other fantastic films. More Mutantville Players made an appearance for the screening including Scarecrow At Midnight actors Janice Mitchell Wyatt and Tara Nicole Azarian.
Films included in the screenings were Christopher G. Moore’s Flush With Fear, Loneliness by The Adrenalin Group, and the first installment of Chris Gervais’ Fantastic Tales of the Unknown: Junker. All of the films were a lot of fun and it was an honor for MVP to be included among them. Junker went on to win for “Best Original Film” and the Zatoichi/Star Wars mashup Revenge of the Jedi won for “Best Fanfilm.” The audience seemed pleased with Scarecrow At Midnight as director J.T.McRoberts noted that there were several people cheering and yelling at the screen during the kill sequence. What more can a filmmaker ask for?
After the film festival, MVP headed over to the world premiere of Ghost Trek from our good buddies Michael Plumides and Robert W. Filion. The crowd cheered and yelled during the screening and seemed to appreciate the antics displayed on the screen. After the screening, Streebo did his best to moderate a Q&A panel consisting of the entire cast – but it quickly descended into anarchy. Fortunately no women, children or ghosts were harmed and everyone enjoyed the hijinks unfolding on the stage. Ghost Trek is still being featured on Funny or Die! so click on over and vote for the preview clip.
MVP wound down the night by attending the Adrenalin Group’s Q&A which included a preview of their upcoming work Perception written by Michael Ray Williams of A Few Brains More. After following the making of A Few Brains More for almost two years, MVP was excited to get to see the final product. We grabbed our popcorn and hunkered down to watch the world premiere of A Few Brains More which included more zombie hijinks, 70’s era fashion disasters and crazy kung fu than you can shake a flying guillotine at! We had a lot of fun with the movie and recommend that fans check out this fun zombie flick as soon as you get the chance.
Sunday was hectic as everyone was trying to get in their final panel obligations before breaking down for the day. Brento and Streebo were honored to sit on the “Ask A Filmmaker” panel alongside Jaysen from Mad Ones Films, Michael & Christine from The Adrenaline Group, Robert W. Filion from Image Impact Group and BRINKE STEVENS from one hundred and fifty cult classics! Squee! Yes, we were on a panel with Brinke “Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama” Stevens! How this happened, we have no idea, but it was an honor and a pleasure to share the stage with the legendary Scream Queen!
We wrapped up the day by shooting an interview with Brinke and followed that up by talking to a little spicy sister on the rise – Ms. Addy Miller of The Walking Dead and Ghost Trek. Be on the lookout for our interview videos to be posted in the coming days.
The Mutantville Players had an absolute blast and would like to extend a round of thanks to the organizers at ConCarolinas for putting on such a fun festival in North Carolina. We would also like to thank our good friends at Ghost Trek for sharing their table space with us. And lastly thank you to the always lovely Brinke Stevens for giving her time for the interview. Thank you all for an amazing con experience and one that won’t be topped any time soon.
Please visit the links in this article and support the artists and their work. They are working hard to bring you original fiction and without them the genre would be a much sadder place. See you next year. As always keep checking Mutantville.com for your up to the minute horror news in North Carolina.
