Chinese New Year is this Monday, so we focus on A Chinese Ghost Story or Sien nui yau wan this week. A Chinese Ghost Story was directed by Siu-Tung Ching and stars Leslie Cheung, Joey Wang, Ma Wu and Elvis Tsui. You may notice that Elvis Tsui was in last week’s focus The Seventh Curse. He’s a busy guy…he’s been in 120 films and TV series. The original novel for A Chinese Ghost Story was written by Songling Pu and was adapted for screen by Gai Chi Yuen, who is also known for The Legend of Drunken Master with Jackie Chan and Once Upon a Time in China with Jet Li.
More after the leap…
A Chinese Ghost Story is about a tax collector that arrives in a small town and oddly enough people aren’t too friendly to him. This must be one of those eternal things…people don’t like tax collectors. Anyway, he ends up staying at an old temple and meets a Taoist swordsman Yen Che-Hsia. Yen warns him to stay out of trouble, but if he did there would be no story. He also meets the lovely Nieh Hsiao-Tsing and falls in love with her. The challenge is that she is a ghost. There is a scarey tree spirit that has Nieh bound for eternity.

You have to love those special effects! Especially the red glowy things.
I saw this movie in my childhood. And after 10 years I did not remember anything about this movie but I found out it I also don’t know how I was able to find out this movie. It’s my life. My all times favorite movie. My words will fall short of true …
A Chinese Ghost Story – Wu Ma Raps!
My favorite scene from my favorite movie: Wu Ma as the ghost-busting, monster-slaying wandering holy man, doing a motivational rap!
This one is much more modern looking and sounding.
