It’s actually erroneous to say Dredd was based on Stallone and it’s something artist Carlos Ezquerra has since retracted as it was based on an off-hand comment he made for a laugh to the press after a Judge Dredd ’95 press-screening.
Dredd was based on David Carradine in Death Race 2000 & Dirty harry. Nice review though but something needs clearing up:
Here’s a Dredd / Raid Timeline –
2007/2008 Alex garland writes first drafts of Dredd ‘Peach Trees’ screenplay.
12/2008: Alex Garland named Dredd screenwriter.
09/2009: Artist, Mark ‘Jock” Simpson confirms he has been creating visuals off of Garland’s Dredd script.
05/2010: Dredd creator, John Wagner, confirms Dredd script is written.
07/2010: Version 8 of Dredd script is LEAKED online.
07/2010: Late July, Todd Brown confirms working with Gareth Evans on Berandal.
08/2010: Somewhere between Aug. ’10 & Nov. ’10, Gareth Evans shelves the film Berandal due to budget and begins work on The Raid script.
08/2010: Pre-production on Dredd begins.
11/2010: Pre-production on Raid begins.
11/2010: Dredd begins filming, finishes in Feb.’11 and enters a year of post-production.
03/2011: Raid begins filming (unsure of finish date).
Note: Evans has said he found out about the Dredd script during Raid post-production and rushed the release of Raid to get it out first.
Thanks for the feedback, joe! I wish I had this timeline before I recorded the show. I didn’t know that bit about Ezquerra saying Stallone was his model was a joke. I’m glad to know that Dredd went into production long before The Raid. Now I can enjoy both without any reservations. It’s interesting to see the similarities between the two – unrelated films.
Hey, dug the podcast, especially your part of the discussion, Streebo. Too bad it didn’t do better (Dredd I mean), but I’ll check out your future podcasts.
Thanks for checking out the show, Matt. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it bums me out that Dredd bombed at the box office. I hope it covers some ground once it hits DVD and Blu Ray so we have a chance at a sequel. If not – at least we have one good Judge Dredd movie to watch. Thanks for listening!
