Welcome back to another wild and whooly edition of Fridays with MVP, oh my faithful mutants. It’s been a crazy month for MVP so far as the Mutantville Players have been deep in the trenches of post-production working on final post for G.H.O.S.T. to get ready for our upcoming private cast and crew screening on October 30th. The footage looks great, the sound is coming along and we’ve just cut a deal with the great Martin Bowes of Attrition to compose the final score for our little supernatural thriller.
We’re super busy this month so there’s little time for updates. We’re going to leave you with a few videos and pics to give you an idea of what’s happening in the world of horror here in North Carolina and beyond while we get back making movie magic – or is that MAJIC! Just a reminder that RETROFANTASMA CLASSICS returns to the big screen tomorrow night (Friday) at the Carolina Theatre. It’s an awesome double feature of KING KONG VS. GODZILLA and MOTHRA! Both are on 35mm. The print of KING KONG comes from the Universal Pictures vault and is in NEAR MINT condition!

Begins 15 minutes after the end of King Kong
When a scheming entrepreneur kidnaps a pair of six inch-tall twin faeries, a giant moth flips its lid and attacks Japan, its wings creating ferocious winds that destroy all in its path! Mothra is considered one of the best Japanese monster movies from the 1950s-70s and the next best effort that director Inshiro Honda put out after the original Godzilla.

Godzilla finally makes his Retrofantasma Classics debut. For more than a decade, I’ve wanted to screen the wonderfully-goofy Godzilla 1985 for Retrofantasma, but could never locate a print, and that was a film released when I was a teenager. Imagine how much harder it is to find decent 35mm prints of the early Godzilla movies in the United States. What a shock it was when Universal Pictures claimed rights to King Kong vs. Godzilla. My first impulse was to tell Universal that they were wrong. I’d always heard that the rights to Godzilla belonged to Toho Studios, the original Japanese distributor, and very protective they were of them. But no, I learned that King Kong is a Universal property and Godzilla just happens to be along for the ride, and that’s how Godzilla now finds himself stomping though Durham. As for Mothra, I’d known that Sony Pictures had a print but, until King Kong vs. Godzilla came along, I’d never had a worthy concept for a double feature.
UPDATE:
Columbia Pictures has inadvertently sent us the 101-minute JAPANESE UNCUT version of MOTHRA! (Rarely seen on the big screen in the United States!) It has English subtitles and includes 10 minutes of footage cut from the American release version!

MOTHRA “UNCUT” at RETROFANTASMA CLASSICS on Friday night (October 14th)! Don’t forget that the 2nd film of the double feature NO LONGER starts at 9:30 p.m. It now begins 15 MINUTES AFTER THE END OF THE 1st MOVIE. This means that MOTHRA should hit the screen sometime between 9:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
Plus, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to see CINEMATIC TITANIC in March at the Carolina Theatre as the Retrofantasma Grand Door Prize!
