Welcome back to another edition of Mutantville Monday, oh faithful Mutants!  We’ve come through another long and productive weekend aboard the Mutantville Mothership so it’s time to give you a rundown on the latest happenings in the worlds of speculative fiction – as seen through the eyes of independent filmmakers.  We have a steaming hot load of MVP News for you this morning followed by the Box Office Report with Contagion topping the charts and crazy rumors from around the web – so let’s get started!

(Get your mind and your noses blown after the leap!)

MVP MOTHERSHIP SIGHTED IN SKIES OVER CHARLOTTE!!!

First up we need to let you know to mark your calendars for October 29th as our good buddy Kenny Caperton at the Myers House NC is hosting his Third Annual Myers House NC Halloween Bash featuring a night of awesome horror flicks including Deviling by Michael Sharpe and MVP’s own Scarecrow At Midnight.  MVP had another productive weekend as post-production continued on the long awaited supernatural thriller – G.H.O.S.T. starring Kathy Butler Sandvoss and Scott Thomas and a whole host of really cool actors from the Charlotte Film Community.  Streebo (that’s Me!) has been hard at work on sharpening the final cut of the movie in preparation for digital FX editor Brento’s final pass on the digital work.  We’re gearing up for a private screening this Fall in advance of a DVD release and limited theatrical run – so please make sure that you “like” the official Facebook Fanpage so you can keep up to date as things develop.

Speaking of Facebook Fanpages – there is at least one fanpage for every major MVP project. These fanpages serve to introduce people to the project and Mutantville Productions as well as to direct them to the various places that project is represented on the internet – such as the IMDb.  Speaking of the IMDb, the producers at MVP are proud to announce that our little zombie opus Devil Comes Down has finally been accepted onto the IMDb! For the record – MVP has two completed projects accounted for on the IMDb – including the aforementioned Devil Comes Down and the neo-modern slasher short- Scarecrow At Midnight.  Please visit the official IMDb pages for both and “like” the pages and if you have seen the movies themselves – please rate them on the IMDb ten point scale.  Do this for MVP and good things will come to you!

In local news, our friends at the Triangle Horror Movies Meetup Group celebrated another anniversary this past weekend by throwing a “thank you” party for group founder Melly.  Streebo is a proud member of the Triangle Horror Movies Meetup Group and does his best to join them for movie screenings and events whenever in Raleigh/Durham area.  At last year’s party we celebrated by watching Troll 2 with running commentary from everyone in attendance and it was a real blast.  With all the great horror events in the Triangle Area such as Retrofantasma, Escapism Film Festival and the Nevermore Film Festival – the Triangle Horror Group is a great way to make new friends with the same common interest in slimy things that go bump in the night so check out the official page on Meetup.com.

HORROR AT THE BOX OFFICE!!!

After a month of consecutive horror releases it took Contagion to finally reach the top!  Contagion’s snot nosed tale of viral terror must have struck a chord of fear in audiences because it routed the long running The Help from the top and grossed a cool $23 million in 3,222 theaters across the country.  Contagion grossed more than the last snot-nosed horror flick Outbreak back in 1995 but it is uncertain if Contagion will hold on to audiences enough to outgross the final $67 million that Outbreak grossed in total almost sixteen years ago.  Check back to Mutantville.com as Streebo will get out to review Contagion for you in the coming week.

CONTAGION TRAILER

Horror made other news this weekend as the little known low budget monster flick entitled Creature hit the record books for being one of the lowest grossing movies all of time!  At exactly 1,507 theaters, Creature took in $331,000 for a record setting fifth lowest grossing movie of all time and the second worst movie of all time in terms of per-theater average.  Streebo actually missed the chance to see Contagion by opting to go see Creature instead – but the local theater which advertised Creature over the past month in their front lobby – didn’t even bother to play the film.  WTF?  Perhaps this actual lack of theatrical play had something to do with Creature’s record setting effort – but hey – making it to the record books in one way or another is better than never making a record at all!

In other box office news, Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D swapped positions at the box office with Shark Night 3D slightly bettering Apollo 18 with $3.5 million to Apollo 18′s $2.9 million.  Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark hovered just outside the top ten with another $2.2 million.  Of the three films – only Apollo 18 is in the black with it’s total gross of $17 million worldwide which has well surpassed it’s $5 million budget.  Studios take note – you can throw a ton of money at your factory made horror films -but the audiences see through the plastic to the crap beneath. Only the true low budget horror filmmakers that put more imagination than dollars into their work will continue to make a profit. Go Team Indie Horror!

It’s not horror but one part science fiction and one part awesome, the overseas import, Attack the Block hit theaters Friday.  It’s hard to find Attack The Block playing near you – but if you see it advertised at your local theater – take the time to check it out and you won’t be disappointed.  No, I haven’t had the chance to see it yet – but the trailer looks great and the reviews from across the web have been positive!  Check out this recent review for Attack The Block from our good buddy Shloggs over at Shloggs’ Horror Blog!
