Looking at Speculative Fiction from Another Dimension.

13 Ghosts (1960)

13 Ghosts was directed by William Castle. Mr. Castle also directed House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price. 13 Ghosts stars Charles Herbert, Jo Morrow, Martin Milner, Rosemary DeCamp, Donald Woods and Margaret Hamilton (Who you may recognize at the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz). The film is about a family that inherits a house that turns out to be haunted. There are a special pair of goggles that allow them to see the ghosts. Let’s check out the trailer.

I found a copy of an old movie poster as well.

One interesting thing about this film is that William Castle used a gimmick called “Illusion-O” to show or hide the ghost. When people walked into the theater, they were given glasses that had red and blue cellophane. If they were brave they could look through the red side if they were scared they could look through the blue side. The film was shown in black and white. The ghosts were tinted blue and superimposed over the other film. So the blue cellophane would hide the ghosts. While the red enhanced the ghosts, they were still visible with the naked eye.
