The pending prequel,”The Thing 2011″ is coming. It will be released October 14th, 2011. This made me want to focus this week on John Carpenter’s The Thing. John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982. It was loosely based on The Thing From Another World which was released in 1951. From the trailer of the new The Thing 2011, they are sticking to the Carpenter version and not the 1951 version. (I’ll include the new trailer below if you haven’t seen it yet)

The film stars Kurt Russell, who also stars in other John Carpenter films: Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from LA. It also stars Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hllahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur as well as many others. As you know, the film was directed by John Carpenter. It was written by John W. Campbell Jr. The screenplay was written by Bill Lancaster.

The Thing is about a group of American scientists on an expedition in Antarctica (fun filming conditions for sure!). They run into some wild Norwegians shooting a dog. The dog mutates and attacks the other dogs in the cage. The scientists realize it’s an alien that has the ability to take over the bodies of others. On a side note…Why in the world do scientist go places like Antarctica? Didn’t these people see the beginning of the Empire Strikes Back? I mean…come on!

Here is the trailer for The Thing released in 1982.

The Thing came out in 1982, and unfortunately for the film, it came out just weeks after one of the most beloved exterrestrial films of all time, ET. What makes this fact unique to The Thing is that unlike ET, this film portrays
