The Faculty Invades Scary Movie Saturday!

“Six students are about to find out their teachers really are from another planet.”

The 1990’s were a strange time for horror fans.  As the 80’s drew to a close, Freddy Krueger crossed over into mainstream pop culture and in his wake there was a horror glut as everyone tried to make horror more marketable to the mainstream masses.  The glut lead to disinterest on the part of the general public.

Horror films were watered down (see Wes Craven’s battles with the MPAA over Shocker) and quietly faded into the background.  There were a few gems here and there such as Near Dark, In the Mouth of Madness, Candyman, and Lord of Illusions but it wasn’t until Scream revitalized the genre in 1996 that horror became the center of mainstream attention again. The impact of Scream on horror has been well discussed here on Mutantville so there’s no need to go too deep into it again.

The wave of Scream copy cats that followed became an endless sea of faces floating in space but the public remained interested.  It was out of this flood of imitators that an original emerged.  A collaboration between Scream writer Kevin Williamson and Robert Rodriguez called The Faculty carved a swath of terror across the screen in 1998 and has since garnered a cult following.

From IMDb:

Herrington High, Ohio, a small-town highschool. All of a sudden, the teachers start changing attitude. When Casey and Delilah have to hide in a closet in the teacher’s lounge, they witness the strangulation of Nurse Harper by two of them. Shocked, they manage to flee. Only moments later, the nurse seems to be very alive, but also somehow changed, like all the teachers and most of the students. Only Casey, Delilah and four others seem to be suspicious. Proof of an alien infection is finally brought by the chemistry teacher, who also points out a way to kill the infected humans. The plan now is to get the queen, before the aliens can spread out over the whole country.

So here’s your chance to check out one of the unheralded gems of the 1990’s – The Faculty.  I’ll go far enough to say that not only is this film a gem – it’s one of the best gems of the 90’s.  Rodriguez and Williamson serve up a veritable horror smorgasbord that simultaneously pays homage to classic horror films while keeping everything new and exciting.
