The Worlds of Speculative Fiction Through the Eyes of Independent Filmmakers.

Junji Ito's Uzumaki.
This week on Scary Movie Saturday, we’re featuring a modern classic from the demented mind of the Japanese master of horror – Junji Ito – Uzumaki.
The story concerns the inhabitants of the small Japanese town of Kurôzu-cho as they become obsessed by the occurrences of natural and artificial spirals around them. The result of this obsession is a slow transformation into something other than human, leading to a gruesome, realistically-depicted death.

La Spina Del Diavolo Italian One Sheet.
“The living will always be more dangerous than the dead.”
This week on Scary Movie Saturday – we thought we would spotlight the work of the man who is arguably the best horror filmmaker actively making horror films today – Guillermo Del Toro. Most fans are familiar with Del Toro’s mainstream work such as Hellboy, Blade II or Mimic – but we want to take a look at one of his smaller, more personal projects - El Espinazo Del Diablo or The Devil’s Backbone if you prefer the English title. We’ve discussed Del Toro and his works many times before on Mutantville.com so it is with great pride that we share this film with you today. This is what Modern Horror filmmakers should aspire to emulate.

Among The Fallen (2011)
Welcome back, Muties. If you’re tired of the onslaught of remakes and found footage horror – then the Doctors of Horror at MVP have the cure. This week, we’re featuring an indie gem called Among The Fallen from filmmaker Jay Shatzer. In my journeys across the Internetz, I often critique independent horror films that are posted online. It’s an exercise that keeps me sharp, keeps me in touch with the community, and best of all introduces me to true ground level no holds barred indie horror.
This week, I had the good fortune to watch Among The Fallen which tells the story of a writer struggling to survive the night when besieged by his personal demons and a horde of ghouls. Among The Fallen features gorgeous cinematography, Fulci-like ghouls and a story that everyone can identify with.

George A. Romero's Day of the Dead
It’s the darkest day of horror the world has ever known – it’s George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead! In 1969, George A. Romero changed the genre of horror as we know it and the way films are made as we know it with his seminal zombie classic Night of the Living Dead. He followed that up almost a decade later with the now equally important Dawn of the Dead which ushered in an era of gore films. In the 80′s Romero found himself unable to secure the financing he wanted for his third entry in the zombie series and was forced to scale the entire project back.
When Day of the Dead was finally released – fans of his previous two films didn’t know what to make of the bleak nihilistic tale of terror that unfolded before them. With time – Romero’s Day of the Dead has come to be heralded as another classic in a series filled with classics. It’s a personal favorite of the Mutantville Players and we’re happy that someone uploaded it to Youtube so that we could share it with you here.

Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)
Two years ago, the
SAW franchise had been dominating the Halloween season for six years and
SAW VI was due to hit theaters in one week.
Paranormal Activity was a little known haunted house movie – but was talked about in horror circles for the six months leading up to it’s release. Streebo was there on opening weekend, when
Paranormal Activity was playing for one weekend only in select cities across the country. Fans were encouraged to vote online to expand the theatrical release and that was exactly what happened. MVP was there leading the way as horror turned the corner from torture to hauntings.
