Clive Barker’s Jericho on Scary Movie Saturday!

Clive Barker's Jericho (2007)

We’re changing gears slightly again this week as we focus not on a movie – but a video game. This is the last video game to bear Clive Barker’s name and although there was a planned sequel nothing has come of it meaning that Barker’s fans who want more video games from him will have to make do with Clive Barker’s Undying from 2002 and Jericho from 2007. Clive Barker’s Jericho tells the story of a black ops squad called Jericho consisting of a variety of sorcerous and psychic commandos and their battle to keep the demonic Firstborn from bursting through inter-dimensional gates into our world.

Sounds epic doesn’t it? Well it is epic! You get to play a variety of these black ops agents in what is best described as Gears of War meets Silent Hill on acid. It’s an endless assault from beginning to end and is powered by a great mythology laid out by Barker.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence Comes to Stanley Kubrick Saturday!

A.I.Artificial Intelligence (2001)

No you didn’t misread the title. It does indeed say Stanley Kubrick Saturday. Last night, Streebo made the pilgramage out to Retrofantasma at the Carolina Theatre to see Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining in 35mm.

To honor this momentous event in which Streebo experienced his first Stanley Kubrick theatrical viewing with a packed theater – we are changing Scary Movie Saturday to Stanley Kubrick Saturday for one day! Ironically – we’re going to feature a Stanley Kubrick film that he didn’t get the chance to direct. He did however produce the movie and design it before handing it over to Steven Spielberg.

Stanley Kubrick circa Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick circa Eyes Wide Shut

Spielberg initially refused to direct the project feeling unworthy of directing a Stanley Kubrick film. After Kubrick passed in 1999, Spielberg took up the task of seeing A.I. through to completion in honor of his friend. So that leads us to today.

Streebo got to experience the glory of The Shining in 35mm last night so we’re going to celebrate with some Kubrick today. I couldn’t find any other Stanley Kubrick films posted on Youtube so A.I. it is. In true guerrilla filmmaking spirit we’ve tied it all together to honor the occasion.

Here’s to the greatest filmmaker of all time – Stanley Kubrick. This is A.I.Artificial Intelligence on Stanley Kubrick Saturday!

Stephen King’s The Dark Half on Scary Movie Saturday!

The Dark Half (1993) from www.stephenkingshop.com

Next weekend, Retrofantasma at the Carolina Theatre is featuring Stephen King’s The Shining. This week they are in the middle of their Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for an historic exhibit. MVP wants to play along so we’re featuring a different work by Stephen King – The Dark Half.

To be fair The Shining is perhaps more a work of Stanley Kubrick while The Dark Half was a collaboration with George A. Romero. According to legend, Romero had a lot of conflict on the set with star Timothy Hutton. To be fair – Hutton puts on a tour de force performance in the dual role of George Stark and Thad Beaumont.

Watch The Dark Half this week. Donate to the Carolina Theatre’s Kickstarter tomorrow. Go see The Shining next Friday at Retrofantasma.

I’ll see you there. Today, it’s The Dark Half on Scary Movie Saturday! Get busy watching – or get busy dying.

Humanoids From The Deep aka Monster on Scary Movie Saturday!

Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

This week’s Scary Movie Saturday selection comes to us from the producorial hands of the King of the B’s himself – Roger Corman! We’re talking about the infamous JAWS ripoff – Humnanoids From The Deep or Monster as it is known in the UK. Did you know that Corman originally wanted Joe Dante to direct and Rob Bottin to do FX for Humanoids From The Deep?

As Dante was just coming off another JAWS ripoff – Piranha – he decided to pass. Dante went on to direct The Howling which led him to directing Gremlins for Stephen Spielberg and the rest is cinematic history. Meanwhile Humanoids From The Deep was handed off to female director Barbara Peters. Rob Bottin put in some of his earliest work and it is just as visceral and impressive as anything in his oeuvre.

Peters did a commendable job helming this fishy tale about Lovecraftian fish-men that emerge from the sea to mate with human women – but when Corman felt the final cut needed more nudity – Peters refused. Corman handed the task of re-shoots off to little known Jimmy Murakami who shot several more humanoid attacks on nubile young women. Peters has since disowned Humanoids From The Deep because of the reshoots. The movie fell into obscurity and was only available in complete form from Japan – until Shout Factory recently resurrected the title along with the rest of Corman’s catalog by releasing them on Blu Ray.

Alan Wake on Christmas Eve Edition of Scary Movie Saturday!

Alan Wake (2010)

Happy holidays from your friendly neighborhood Mutantville Players!  This week, we thought we would try something different as a special Christmas treat for everyone.  Instead of featuring a scary movie – we thought we would go with a scary video game – the scariest video game of 2010 in fact – Alan Wake for the XBOX 360.
Alan Wake tells the story of acclaimed horror writer Alan Wake and his trip to get away from it all in the secluded Northeastern town of Bright Falls.  Alan Wake is quite simply the best horror game that I’ve played all year and I can’t wait to play through it again on a more difficult setting.  I’ve talked about it enough already, you’re just going to have to take a look for yourself.
