Christopher Young: Incredible Composer

Christopher Young - composer

Christopher Young - composer

This week we’re going to focus on the great film scores of Christopher Young. I’d have to say one of my favorite film scores is from Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser.” It’s just one of those sound tracks I can put on and listen to whether it is driving, working around the house, writing or some other creative process. There is just something about that score.

Christopher Young graduated from Massachusetts Hampshire College with a BA in music. He went on to do post graduate work at North Texas State University. Young was inspired by composer Bernard Herrmann, of Citizen Kane and Vertigo fame. He moved to Los Angeles and attended classes at UCLA where he studied with film composer David Raksin.

Evil Dead 2 (1987)

Evil Dead 2 poster

Evil Dead 2 movie poster

As I was driving through Anson County, NC last weekend, I couldn’t help but think of Evil Dead 2. After all, that’s where it was filmed. The Color Purple was also filmed in Wadesboro and nearby Lilesville. Obviously these films are slightly different but still cool for a small town like Wadesboro, NC (census of 2010, there were 5,780 people). The main set for Evil Dead 2 was built inside the gymnasium at JR Faison Junior High School.

Evil Dead 2 was written and directed by Sam Raimi. It was also written by Scott Spiegel. It stars…you guessed it, Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Ted Raimi, Denise Bixler and Scott Spiegel as one of the “fake Shemps.” For those of you who may not be familiar with this term, be ready for a slight tangent.

John Carpenter Interview “It’s All Horror.”

John Carpenter at the Fright Night Film Fest 2011.

I never realized how much of an influence John Carpenter was on my worldview growing up. He was responsible for so many of my favorite childhood movies – Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, Starman and so many more. It wasn’t until I became a dedicated horrorphile that I realized John Carpenter was responsible for those movies and oh so many more of my favorites in the horror genre. Halloween, The Fog, Christine, The Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth of Madness and so many other undeniable horror classics came from his directorial hand.

As a fan and certified horror geek – I knew that Carpenter’s movies shone with greatness but it wasn’t until we started Mutantville Productions in the winter of 2003 – that I began to look at horror films with a more critical eye.  I suddenly realized that Carpenter’s works were not only the work of a true auteur – but the work of inspired genius.

MVP and Image Impact Group together again.

The Mutantville Players are off to the set of Robert W. Filion’s Athena again this weekend.  We’re helping Image impact Group all month long and it’s been a great shoot so far.  We’re one week away from the private cast and crew screening of G.H.O.S.T. and all we have left to do is slide all of the final sound and FX pieces into place.  It’s going to be so much fun to share the final product with all of our friends for Halloween.

In the midst of all of this creative activity – we still find the time to bring you reviews, articles, interviews and special features that you won’t find anywhere else!  Speaking of interviews – - I hear there’s a brand new interview with John Carpenter coming to Mutant TV very soon!

Paranormal Activity’s Oren Peli with MVP’s Inspirational Filmmaker Quote of the Week.

Paranormal Activity 3's Grandfather Oren Peli.

“Personally I like the slow burn; I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. When I think about the movies that were most effective on me as a viewer I think of the original Haunting and the Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, the Sixth Sense, the Others. These movies are not over the top at all, they are movies that rely on good story telling, good acting, good premise, good exposition and I want to stay true to that in future projects. ”

Evil Dead Remake Alive and Well!

According to sources at Dreadcentral – work has begun on the long anticipated Evil Dead remake.  Well, we think it’s the Evil Dead remake that they’re working on – as Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have both been very non-committal and cryptic about doing another installment of the original series.  Sam Raimi has long talked about the possibility of producing a reboot of Evil Dead with someone else taking the directorial reigns. Click on over to Dreadcentral to read the entire article.  Keep your dial pointed at Mutantville.com for the latest in horror and sci-fi news as it happens!

The Changeling, Pet Sematary and Assault on Precinct 13 make for spooky Easter weekend!

Tired of dying Easter eggs this weekend? Then get out to the Triad theatres this weekend to see a wave of movies filled with people that are dying to scare you!  Tonight, the Carolina Theatre in Durham is hosting a double feature of The Changeling and Stephen King’s Pet Sematary and then tomorrow night Cinema Overdrive returns to The Colony with a double feature of  John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 and Sam Raimi’s Thou Shalt Not Kill, Except . . .

Make your way to Retrofantasma tonight at the Carolina Theatre for this spooky supernatural double feature of two of the finest horror films ever made.  The Changeling is up first at 7pm followed by Pet Sematary at 9pm.  Get there early to sign up for cool door prizes as usual.  Tickets are only $8 for both movies.  As usual it’s more fun than you can shake your boomstick at!

From the Retrofantasma website:
Although set in the US, The Changeling was largely filmed in Canada. It was the first film to win Best Picture in the Canadian Film Awards after its name was changed to the Genie Awards. The story is based upon events experienced by writer Russell Hunter while he was living in the Henry Treat Rogers Mansion of Denver, Colorado. Director Martin Scorsese placed The Changeling on his list of the 11 scariest horror films of all time. Pet Sematary was the first filmed screenplay that Stephen King adapted from one of his own novels. King required the movie to be filmed in Maine and his screenplay to be followed rigorously. George Romero was originally set to direct but when filming was delayed, he dropped out. Tom Savini was offered the director’s chair, but turned down the project. Eventually, Mary Lambert stepped in. Shot for a $11.5 million, Pet Sematary would gross more than $57 million and become the highest-grossing horror film of 1989.

And tomorrow night ring in Easter properly by watching a gritty double feature at The Colony in Raleigh starting with John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 at 9:30pm and then Sam Raimi’s Thou Shalt Not Kill, Except. . . at 11:30pm.  Tickets for Cinema Overdrive are only $8.50 for both movies so you’d be crazy not to take advantage of it!

Check out the trailers below and then get thyself to the theater or else this Sunday you won’t wake up to the Easter Bunny , you’ll wake up in the Pet Sematary.
