Well….Streebo and I are headed to the Fright Night Film Fest in Louisville, Kentucky. I was eager to go as soon as I heard Roger Corman would be there. Roger Corman is one of the Patron Saints of Mutantville. We studied (and still study) him for inspiration and great ideas. I found some interesting information on the film festival. I’ll do more posts focused on Corman.

Be sure to check out the Mutantville Players videos on You Tube to see the footage we get while we’re there! Plus we’ll come back with lots of pictures as well.

Best Use Of Stock Footage Ever In A B-Movie – Dinoshark

io9 has posted a clip from Roger Corman’s recent Syfy flick Dinoshark!

Last week, Syfy aired the awesomely cheesetastic movie Dinoshark, directed by Roger Corman himself. And in this scene, Corman shows us why he is the master of stock footage repurposed for giant monster fu.

Let’s face it: Most of Dinoshark is padding, packed with random teen girl water polo players and idyllic shots of Puerto Vallarta. There’s a jovial feeling to the whole thing, as if Corman and his buddies really wanted a vacation in Mexico and got some resort to underwrite the shoot as long as they promised to do a lot of scenes highlighting tourism. We learn all about how you can go whale watching, snorkeling, boating, and parasailing. We see Corman and his pals eating tasty food with “scientists.” (Yes, Corman is in the movie, playing a “scientist” who trains dolphins and eats tasty food at a resort with his cute wife while sequencing Dinoshark’s DNA using a home PC.)

Anyway, back to what makes this scene so genius. You’re watching the surfing footage. You’re thinking, “Oh jeezus this is totally stock footage.” You’re watching more of the surfing. You’re starting to wonder how long this can go on. They’re still surfing! Still! Wait for it . . . wait for it . . . and . . . YES! Dude!

I’m telling you – it’s worth the wait.

THE DIG: Much Ado About Roger Corman's Oscar

roger-corman-1From The Dig by J. Riddle:  Roger Corman has been called a lot of things. Shrewd. Miserly. Maverick. He’s been given titles like King of the Cult Film, King of the B-Movies, and the Pope of Pop Cinema. The last is probably the most appropriate, and not just because it sounds cool and Corman says he likes it. For over 50 years, Corman’s particular breed of low-budget, action-oriented, socially conscious exploitation fare has graced the cinema, to the persistent delight of audiences and, in turn, to his significant profit. He’s brought his talents to bear on every genre under the sun, and has even invented a few of his own. He has a finely-tuned eye for talent–it’s only a little exaggeration to say it would be easier to list the big name Hollywood directors, writers, actors of recent decades who didn’t get their start with Corman than those who did.

And the Oscar goes to… B-movie King Roger Corman!

From yahoo-news:

LOS ANGELES – Roger Corman, memorably dubbed “the Orson Welles of the Z-Movie” and “the Pope of Pop Cinema,” never expected the words “Academy Award recipient” would accompany his name.

The man, whose 350 movie credits include such low-budget fare as “The Masque of the Red Death” and “X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes,” is receiving an honorary Oscar for a lifetime of achievement that includes mentoring such filmmakers as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron and Ron Howard.

Corman, 83, said he was aware the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was considering him for the honor. He felt certain he would not make the cut, though.

“I predicted that I would not win because I make low-budget films, and I felt the academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films. I was truly surprised when I got the call,” Corman said in an interview at the offices of his production and distribution outfit, New Horizons Pictures.
