The Thing (2011)
“It’s not human, yet.”
Antarctica – 1982. And so begins the prequel story to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing. The Thing (2011) tells the story of a Norwegian Outpost that discovers an alien spacecraft and the subsequent “Thing” of the title. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Kate Lloyd a graduate student drafted by the Norwegian scientists to aid in the reclamation of the alien life form that they discover.
It’s not long before the Norwegians have the Thing carved out of the ice and thawing in their basement like a giant banana Popsicle. After that all hell proceeds to breaking loose for the remainder of the running time of the movie.
The creature FX by Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis feature an amazing blend of practical make-up and the latest in CGI techniques. The result is dazzling as
The Thing continues to mutate and change and sprout vestigial pseudopods throughout the entire movie much to the delight of Kaiju and monster movie lovers everywhere.

The Thing 1982 poster
The pending prequel,”The Thing 2011″ is coming. It will be released October 14th, 2011. This made me want to focus this week on John Carpenter’s The Thing
. John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982. It was loosely based on The Thing From Another World which was released in 1951. From the trailer of the new The Thing 2011, they are sticking to the Carpenter version and not the 1951 version. (I’ll include the new trailer below if you haven’t seen it yet)
The film stars Kurt Russell, who also stars in other John Carpenter films: Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from LA. It also stars Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hllahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur as well as many others. As you know, the film was directed by John Carpenter. It was written by John W. Campbell Jr. The screenplay was written by Bill Lancaster.

This weekend, Guillermo Del Toro brings us the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake. Del Toro has long been a favorite director of the Mutantville Players and with movies like El Orfanato gracing his producer’s credits, it’s safe to say that Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark will be worth checking out. Well enough is enough – you might as well check out the official trailer below.

“CHUD.com isn’t the best movie website in the world but it’s damn good!”
Chud.com is giving you a chance to win tickets to the advance screening of the Fright Night remake. Before we get to that – we have one hell of a disclaimer to get out there first!
Fright Night (1985) directed by Tom Holland and starring Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Stephen Geoffreys and Roddy McDowell is an undisputed modern vampire classic! Coupled with Lost Boys, Fright Night served to bring the vampire myth out of the dusty castles and into shiny suburbia! If you grew up in the 80′s and saw Fright Night – it’s impact on you will be undeniable and indelible!

According to sources at Dreadcentral – work has begun on the long anticipated Evil Dead remake. Well, we think it’s the Evil Dead remake that they’re working on – as Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have both been very non-committal and cryptic about doing another installment of the original series. Sam Raimi has long talked about the possibility of producing a reboot of Evil Dead with someone else taking the directorial reigns. Click on over to Dreadcentral to read the entire article. Keep your dial pointed at Mutantville.com for the latest in horror and sci-fi news as it happens!

The big news in MVP land this week is that we have found an event at which to premiere the entire Tales From Mutantville anthology. We’ll release an official announcement very soon – but in the meantime be very happy. This is going to be an historic event and one people will remember for a long time to come. MVP is honored to be a part of it.
MVP would like to give a quick shout out of congratulations to our friends at Sharpe Edge Films and Last Call Pictures as they both have films that have been accepted to the upcoming Fright Night Film Fest in Kentucky. That’s right – Monomaniacal and Desdemona 6 will play at the show and the guest of honor is none other than the Master of Horror himself – John Carpenter! Congratulations, guys!
