Scream 4 Screeches it’s way to Theaters this Weekend!

This week, horror fans from across the world have cause to celebrate as one of the most popular horror franchises of all time returns to the theaters for the first time in over ten years.  Scream 4 by director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson returns to wreak havoc upon an unsuspecting populace.   Be sure to line up early to get your tickets to what must surely be the only true horror event of the Spring season.

It is worth noting that the Spring season has often been less than hospitable to the horror genre.  I recall a time when the entire internet was abuzz at the latest collaboration between hotshot directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez for a little movie called Grindhouse.  Grindhouse was released Easter weekend in 2007, everyone talked about it, and then no one went to see it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Scream 4 suffer the same fate.  Horror fans are lazy and would often rather review a movie that they download illegally instead of paying hard earned cash to see a movie and then bitch about it like the old days.  Ah, horror fans, what are we going to do with you?

Check back this weekend for MVP’s exclusive review of Scream 4.  Get out to the theatre and see it for yourself.  Come back and let us know what you think.

In other news, noted director Sidney Lumet passed away over the weekend.  Lumet is well known for his work on films such as Serpico, The Wiz, Twelve Angry Men, and much more.  The cinema will be a much darker place without him.

The creators of SAW, James Wan and Leigh Whannel, teamed to bring you another horror tale entitled InsidiousInsidious opened across the nation for a total box office of $27 million.  With a production budget of less than $2 million, it is safe to say that James Wan will be bringing us more movies for years to come.

This week, Mutant TV brings you the trailers for the latest horror and sci-fi offerings playing at a theater near you.  So put that Mountain Dew down, stop munching on Doritos and get your fat butt down to the theater to watch a movie.  Get out and support the movies you want to see so they keep getting made.

“Rolling Thunder” Strikes Tonight at Cinema Overdrive!

Major Charles Rane returned from Vietnam as a war hero.  Little did he know that a group of desparate thugs would bring violence to his home and destroy everything he loved – forcing the Major to set out seeking righteous retribution with the help of Tommy Lee Jones.  That’s right – we’re talking about the oft overlooked Vietnam Veteran revenge flick Rolling Thunder! Not only did Quentin Tarantino’s Rolling Thunder Pictures distribution company bring us such cult classics as Chunking Express, Switchblade Sisters and Sonatine, but there is an actual movie that served as the inspiration for Tarantino’s company.  Rolling Thunder is airing tonight at the Colony Theater in Raleigh to kick off the 2011 movie season of Cinema Overdrive!  Matt Penachi and the gang do a tremendous job in bringing Raliegh the rarest and craziest cult and horror flicks this side of Castle Rock!

From the Cinema Overdrive newsletter:

“Hello everyone!

We hope that everyone is safe and warm and looking forward to coming out to the Colony on Wednesday, January 12th for ROLLING THUNDER. This is a fantastic yet little seen film, and we’re extremely pleased to be able to present this one on 35mm. You can check out the original theatrical trailer right here:

In addition to that, the new ROLLING THUNDER screen print poster designed by Travis Getz looks terrific as well! It is a 3 color design measuring 18″ x 24″, and since we know the holidays were hard on everyone we’ll be offering this awesome poster for only $20.00 each. That’s a steal, and if you put it in a back lit poster frame it has a special surprise as well! You can get a quick idea of what it looks like by checking out the Facebook Cinema Overdrive group page or the “Rolling Thunder” event page, but the jpeg really doesn’t do it justice.

Showtime is Wednesday, January 12th at 8:00pm. Tickets are $5.50 each. See you there!”

The New Grindhouse Era

From horror-movies.ca:

Back in 2007. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up to make a two part feature film experience appropriately titled Grindhouse. Each director provided their own feature length film in the grindhouse cinema tradition including bad edits, missing reels, and noticeable film grain. It was a throwback film designed to not only be an enjoyable time at the movies, but to recall a point in history when the rejected films of society were celebrated in dollar theaters in big cities around the country. These films usually consisted of taboo subject matter including large amounts of sex, violence, and drug use and in some cases, all of those. This was a form of entertainment that a large portion of society wanted to see, but Hollywood was just not producing at the time. When Grindhouse came out in 2007, it inadvertently opened the flood gates to a style of filmmaking that would invoke a new renaissance of stylistic qualities.
