This week on Scary Movie Saturday we’re bringing you a classic work from Mario Bava – Black Sunday! Black Sunday is the definitive 60′s Gothic horror film starring Scream Goddess Barbara Steele and featuring a chilling opening sequence and stark painterly black and white compositions throughout. True fans of the horror genre need no explanation for this one as Mario Bava is revered far and wide and here on the Mutantville Mothership he holds a lofty position amongst the Patron Saints of Guerrilla Filmmaking.
Streebo made the trip out to see the latest effort (as a producer) from Guillermo Del Toro – a remake of the 1973 film – Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. The name “Guillermo Del Toro” is uttered with respect in the halls of the Mutantville Mothership where he is considered one of the Patron Saints of Guerrilla Filmmaking for his efforts on such genre classics as Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Blade II and Pan’s Labyrinth. Guillermo Del Toro wrote and produced Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark which tells the story of young Sally who is sent to live with her father and his girlfriend and discovers that there is something dark and sinister living in the ancient mansion that wants to claim Sally as their own.
Todd A. Britt let us know that he was about to purchase tickets to see the Patron Saints of Mutantville Rock, Rush in their sole Carolina’s tour date, many of the MVP Players were on board the caravan instantly. The tickets we NOT cheap but anyone who’s seen a Rush show knows that it’s so much more than just a concert. Indeed, it’s a multi-media experience.
Todd, Geo the Lincolnator and I were in our seats 45 minutes prior to the showtime and the excitement slowly built to a fever pitch by the time the lights went down. The show was kicked off by part of a short film called, “RASH” which re-caste the trio as caricatures of themselves in a doughnut shop, whining about the young polka band playing in the corner. The concept of a time machine a comically obsess Alex Lifeson carries around is introduced and we’re are treated to a hilarious montage feature Rush as babies to chimps to boys to men.

The band steps on stage during the final frames of the intro film. What is quit possibly the most technical band performance this writer has ever seen ensues. Twenty years have passed since I last saw these “long awaited friends.” Technically speaking, they have only gotten to be better players over that period. I felt that this time, far more than the last show I caught, they really cut lose and showed the technical prowess that made them famous.
When we got to the obligatory 20 minute Pert drum solo, I was once again amazed that on human being with only 2 hands and 2 feet could produce so many complex sounds. The famous drum kit rotates about half way through and suddenly the drums are keying synth loops and Neil becomes a one man jazz band. It was truly, truly a site to behold. He’s quit possibly the greatest drummer who has ever lived. Simply amazing to behold.
The MVP Players left with their minds blown and their love for music just a little closer to the heart.

Apparently shooting on film just isn’t good enough for some filmmakers. Park Chan-wook – renowned Korean director of such modern horror/action classics as Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Thirst has just finished shooting a his latest horror film. The 30 minute short, entittled Paranmanjang, was shot entirely on his iPhone 4! It’s nice to see modern filmmakers trying to break out of the pack and use the new media as a new means of expressing cinema. Such actions just might earn Park Chan-wook a spot amongst the illustrious pantheon of MVP’s Patron Saints of Guerrilla Filmmaking.
From the Wall Street Journal, “From hunting for a film location, shooting auditions, to doing a documentary on the filming process, everything was shot with the iPhone 4,” Park said, “We went through all the same film-making processes except that the camera was small.”
For the short, he teamed up with his younger brother Park Chan-kyong, a media artist, and KT Corp., the wireless operator that is the exclusive distributor of iPhone in South Korea. KT paid for a portion of the $130,000 in production costs.
The short is a fantastical tale that begins with a middle-aged man fishing one afternoon and then, hours later at night, catches the body of a woman. The panicked man tries to undo the intertwined fishing line, but he gets more and more entangled. He faints, then wakes up to find himself in the white clothes that the woman was wearing. The movie’s point of view then shifts to the woman and it becomes a tale of life and death from a traditional Korean point of view.
Park was not the first South Korean moviemaker to experiment this way. Last October, KT sponsored a film festival with 12 short movies also made with the iPhone 4. Mr. Park’s new work will be screened at nine cinemas nationwide later this month.”

Part of being a filmmaker is always learning and evolving. So as I find some cool tips, I may as well share them. One place I’ve always gotten really cool tips is from commentary tracks on DVDs of the “Patron Saints of MVP.” We all studied these people. For example, Robert Rodriguez has great commentary tracks on his movies. Grab a journal or a notebook, start the film, but be ready with the pause button because he puts lots of information in his commentaries. I also recommend his book, “Rebel without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player

Since the horror world was stunned by the amazing news that the uncut version of Nightbreed has not only been found – but will be screened at the upcoming Horrorhound convention in Indianapolis – what better time to show our love for Clive Barker by revisiting a few of his interviews from years gone by?
