Welcome back to Fridays with MVP, oh faithful Mutants. It’s been another wild and chaotic week on the Mutantville Mothership where we’ve been hard at work on several projects in various stages of productions including Muticia’s Movie Morgue, Indigo Child, Scarecrow At Midnight, Tales From Mutantville, The Metatron Files and G.H.O.S.T. In world horror news, Fright Night(2011) and Conan The Barbarian performed poorly at the box office while Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is poised to surprise everyone this weekend.
We had a busy weekend aboard the Mutantville Mothership this weekend. We moved several projects through various stages of production and had a blast doing it. We’re gearing up to get Tales From Mutantville onto DVD and Blu Ray as well as putting the final touches on G.H.O.S.T. to get it ready for the Fall. Lots of fun things are coming down the pipe for MVP and we thank you all for being a part of it!
FINAL DESTINATION 5 STALLS AT BOX OFFICE GATES!!!
The horror season is off to a slow start as Final Destination 5 stalls at the box office gates this weekend with a lowly take of $18 million. Still, $18 million is better than the $11 million that Grindhouse gained during it’s entire theatrical run so perhaps third place at the box office is not necessarily so bad. The movie is out late in the Summer season but early enough in the fall season to still be lurking in theaters and dollar theaters come Halloween. This Halloween season is packed as each weekend becomes a battleground for the horror top spot with Fright Night coming this week, followed by Red State, Apollo 18, Don’t Be Afraidof the Dark and Paranormal Activity 3 over the coming months. It’s been a crazy couple of months for MVP. It seems like only yesterday that Geo and I were prepping for the trip to the Fright Night Film Fest/Fandom Fest and now it’s all over like a dream.
We’re still uploading our videos and interviews from the convention to Youtube as there’s been a work overload this week that has delayed the last few uploads but I assure you that they are coming! And of course several projects are in various stages of production including post-production on Indigo Child, Family Fiend, and G.H.O.S.T. as well as pre-production of new scripts, updating websites and planning countless other endeavors that are sure to thrill and chill you all. You’ll just have to stay tuned to Mutantville.com to find out!
WORLD HORROR NEWS!!!
True Blood, Dexter and The Walking Dead have been keeping horror alive on the small screen for the past few years – but this weekend, horror makes it’s long awaited return to the big screen with Final Destination 5! Over the coming weeks, we’ll see the Horror floodgates open as we are hit almost back to back with the remake of Fright Night, Apollo 18, Red State, the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake produced by Guillermo Del Toro and finally Paranormal Activity 3 which has taken over the Halloween spot from the SAW franchise! Continue Reading…
Here on the Mutantville Mothership, we’re still working hard on finishing all of the videos from the Fright Night Film Fest for you. Since it’s already Friday, we thought we’d take a moment to do a quick station identification for you in the form of an MVP update! Get into the 21st Century by following us on Twitter @MVP (Yes, we DO have @MVP on Twitter). Then add us on Facebook by “liking” the fanpage.
That’s the tagline to the new haunted house horror film from the producer of Paranormal Activity and writer and director of SAW – Insidious. James Wan directs this tight little spookshow about a young family trying to cope with the effects of unwanted supernatural presences in their lives.
Be on the lookout for a nice supporting role from ghost assault survivor Barbara Hershey (The Entity) as the supportive mother that calls in the psychic to help out. Insidious pays homage to all of the great haunted house films of the past and keeps the audience jumping and guessing from beginning to end. Streebo gives Insidious a 7 out of 10 on the Streebo Scream-o-meter. Go see it while you can!

Just in time for the Academy Awards, it’s the MVP Playa Awards! Last night, Streebo finished his last review of the mainstream horror releases of 2010 when he went to see Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Mutantville.com has tallied the votes and now we are ready to present this year’s MVP Playas Awards.
Streebo began reviewing all the major mainstream horror releases during their theatrical run back in 2004 on the IMDb Horror Board in the topic: Diagnosing the Problems and Celebrating Modern Horror. Streebo’s First double feature review was a back to back viewing of Saw and The Grudge. The topic was eventually locked on the IMDb due to exceeding the allowed number of responses which at one point numbered almost 800 in total.
Streebo has kept the tradition alive since 2007 when he changed the title to Celebrating Modern Horror and began posting v-log reviews as opposed to written essays. He spent all of last year watching the latest releases and reviewing them for you and today we are proud to announce the winners of 2010′s MVP Playas Award.

This weekend you can see the first installment of Tales From Mutantville at the Twelfth Annual Nevermore Film Festivalat the Carolina Theatre in Durham. But did you know that Scarecrow At Midnight was filmed entirely on location at the one and only Myers House NC? Kenny Caperton, owner of the Myers House NC, invited Mutantville Productions out to his home in Hillsborough last October to film Scarecrow At Midnight.
In 1978 John Carpenter took a budget of $320,000, a small cast and an even smaller crew and created what would become known as THE seminal slasher film of modern horror – Halloween. John Carpenter’s Halloween went on to gross over $47 million in the US and $60 million worldwide. It has since grossed countless millions more on endless home video, DVD and blu ray incarnations making it the most profitable independent movie of all time (that is until the The Blair With Project in 1999 (BWP later being replaced by Paranormal Activity in 2009)).
In 2007, while on a trip to California to see the premiere of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Smashing Pumpkins superfan Kenny Caperton decided to walk the streets of Pasadena and revisit the birthplace of a slasher legend. It was on this particular tour of the original Halloween filming locations that Kenny decided what better way was there to preserve the memory of the “Myers House” than by building his own. By 2008, Kenny made that inspiration a reality as construction began on his new home – an almost exact replica of the “Myers House” from John Carpenter’s Halloween.
In 2009 Kenny decided to shoot a tribute film to John Carpenter’s Halloween and based it in his new home. Kenny wrote the script for Judith and brought in Josh Hasty (Mannequin In Static) to direct. The story of Judith shows how Michael’s sister, Judith Myers, influenced him and leads up to the terrifying opening moments of John Carpenter’s film. Kenny doesn’t mind being called a superfan, but he doesn’t want his house to become the main location for every Halloween fan film out there.
In 2010, Kenny asked Mutantville Productions to come out to the Myers House NC and film an original horror film. MVP filmed for two days over a weekend in mid-October and post-production began almost immediately. The rough cut of the film was completed by mid-November and by December, a work print was submitted to the Nevermore Film Festival committee for consideration.
Scarecrow At Midnight was accepted into the Nevermore Film Festival and will make it’s premiere there. The first installment of the Tales From Mutantville anthology will play during the short film block “When the Stars Begin to Fall” on Saturday the 19th at 12pm NOON and again on Sunday the 20th at 2:10pm. Tickets are $8 and are available at the Carolina Theatre box office (package deals and discounts are available).
Writer/director J.T.McRoberts remarks that “I first met Kenny at the First Annual Myers House Halloween Bash in 2009 and then ran into him again at the Nevermore Film Festival in 2010 and he asked me to shoot something original at his house. That’s what I really admire about Kenny, he loves Halloween and horror films so much that he is willing to open his home to strangers to give them a chance to make their own dreams come true.”
” Kenny and I discussed how we wanted Scarecrow At Midnight to be an homage to John Carpenter’s Halloween. We wanted it to have nothing to do with John Carpenter’s movie other than the fact that we used the same house and set the story on Halloween night. In my mind that makes Scarecrow At Midnight a true homage because it doesn’t focus on the past like a fan film – but instead looks towards the future by creating a new horror myth for a new generation. Maybe one day, someone will want to live in “Sonia’s House” from Scarecrow At Midnight.”
If you’re interested in visiting the Spookhouse, then plan to attend one of their events. Kenny hosts regular celebrations at the Myers House NC including the Annual Myers House NC Halloween Bash. Visit the official Myers House NCwebsite for more information.
We reviewed the first assembly of G.H.O.S.T. last night and the verdict is in – it looks great! We were very pleased with what we have so far. Plans have been set in motion to shoot additional scenes for G.H.O.S.T. to expand the proposed short film into a full length feature! We’re planning a horrific new intro scene to set the tone for the movie as well as a few new introductory scenes for the members of our G.H.O.S.T. team. The wheels have been set in motion and a new schedule will be planned out over the coming weeks. The new scenes should put us back in front of the camera for the next few months – extending the filming of G.H.O.S.T. into the spring. We couldn’t be happier with our progress on G.H.O.S.T. and can’t wait to share it with you all.

Since we’ve reached the end of the first cut of G.H.O.S.T., let’s take a look back at the genesis of the project – beginning with Brento’s initial walk through of the opera house.

Last night saw the Mutantville Players return to the opera house once more for another round of pick up shots. Luckily we weren’t just shooting windows and door frames this week as we were able to suit up and get bloody for another cool special make-up FX shot. Alan Whitley out his boomstick down and picked up the latex to play the part of our supernatural visitor. Alan underwent a grueling 3 hour session at the hands of special make-up FX kingpin Todd A. Britt. The air was chilly but Alan’s spirits were warm under layers of silicon, tubing and buckets of blood as he brought our ghostly friend to unatural life! With this shot in the can – we have only two major FX shots left and G.H.O.S.T. will be complete. This Sunday, the Mutantville Players are heading to the green and grassy hills of South Carolina for our final pick up shots with two of our leads – Kathy Sandvoss and Scott Thomas. The journey to make G.H.O.S.T. has been an amazing one. It will be sad to see it all come to an end. Be sure to keep checking Mutantville.com for your up to the minute MVP news!
