“The living will always be more dangerous than the dead.”
This week on Scary Movie Saturday – we thought we would spotlight the work of the man who is arguably the best horror filmmaker actively making horror films today – Guillermo Del Toro. Most fans are familiar with Del Toro’s mainstream work such as Hellboy, Blade II or Mimic – but we want to take a look at one of his smaller, more personal projects - El Espinazo Del Diablo or The Devil’s Backbone if you prefer the English title. We’ve discussed Del Toro and his works many times before on Mutantville.com so it is with great pride that we share this film with you today. This is what Modern Horror filmmakers should aspire to emulate. Continue Reading…

According to sources at Dreadcentral – work has begun on the long anticipated Evil Dead remake. Well, we think it’s the Evil Dead remake that they’re working on – as Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have both been very non-committal and cryptic about doing another installment of the original series. Sam Raimi has long talked about the possibility of producing a reboot of Evil Dead with someone else taking the directorial reigns. Click on over to Dreadcentral to read the entire article. Keep your dial pointed at Mutantville.com for the latest in horror and sci-fi news as it happens!

Scarecrow At Midnight premiered at the 12th Annual Nevermore Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on Saturday February 19th. The neo-modern scarecrow slasher flick played to a raucus crowd that seemed to yell and jump at all the right places. The film played as part of the short film block entitled “When the Stars Begin to Fall” and was accompanied by several fantastic shorts such as The Devil’s Toy, Davis, Last Seen on Delores Street, Written By, Murderabilia, and See The Dead.
Attendees of the premiere included writer/director J.T.McRoberts, star Katie Bearden, as well as several other members of the cast and crew such as Robert W. Filion, Julian Safrit, Janice Mitchell Wyatt, Meg Elliot, Lisa Cobb, Todd A. Britt, Meghan King, Brent Bowers, Geo Swanko, Coty Galloway, Jeremy Bonham and associate producer Jason Arispe. Kenny Caperton, proprietor of the Myers House NC, was also in attendance and was as thrilled as the rest of the cast to see the movie and his house on the big screen. According to the Carolina Theatre – attendance for the festival was estimated to have suprassed the previous year’s event.
The cast and crew roamed the halls of the Carolina Theatre talking to the fans and enjoying the Nevermore Festival. The cast raved about how much fun they had working on the film and the hilarity continued as the group goofed around after the premiere. Director J.T.McRoberts led everyone on a slasherthon to follow up on the terrors of Scarecrow At Midnight by then watching Friday the 13th and Silence of the Lambs in 35mm.
One fan stated that Scarecrow At Midnight reminded him of the classic Goosebumps tale The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight, “except that it (Scarecrow At Midnight) was about a thousand times more terrifying.” Other compliments were passed along to the cast and crew on several aspects of the film from the performances of the cast to the quality of the special make-up effects. Director J.T. McRoberts stated that “having the opportunity to have our movie play at this festival was a dream come true and to have the crowd react in such a positive manner makes it all worth it. This is the only reward a filmmaker needs and I would like to thank the Carolina Theatre for making it possible.”
Scarecrow At Midnight will be available along with the other shorts Indigo Child, Family Fiend, Devil Comes Down, and Respawner the Web Series: Pilot Episode in the Tales from Mutantville anthology collection on DVD and Blu Ray this summer. It was 1968. George A. Romero and a group of his friends and co-workers pooled their money and resources together to make a horror film. That horror film was Night of the Living Dead and it changed the course of horror forever by ushering in the modern age. George A. Romero celebrates his 71st birthday on February 4th. Mutantiville.com and the Mutantville Players would like to wish Mr. Romero a happy birthday. Mutantville.com would like to award Mr. Romero the Inspirational Filmmaker of the Month award for February 2011 for his influence on and undying dedication to the genre we all love. Thank you for the many amazing movies and here’s to hoping for many more.

Our long odyssey to find closure in the saga of Devil Comes Down and the American Zombie Film Contest has come to an end. This past Friday, MVP’s little zombie film opened before a raucous house at the historic Carolina Theatre in Durham. Devil Comes Down served as the curtain raiser for an amazing double feature of George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead as part of the Retrofantasma film series. The Retrofantasma crowds at the Carolina Theatre are the best in North Carolina as they appreciate the genre and always set out to have a good time. Before the show – door prizes were given out including several one sheets for Romero’s latest film as well as three vintage Fangoria issues and an ultra rare G.H.O.S.T. t-shirt provided by Mutantville.com. The popcorn was plentiful, the screams raised the roof and the laughs kept coming as the packed house enjoyed the show from beginning to end. Romero’s latest film did not disappoint as it combined his trademark social satire with gut munching zombie antics.
As with all Retrofantasma showings – the movies were preceded by contemporary trailers to set the stage which on this night included Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, The Thomas Crown Affair, Barbarella, Herbie the Love Bug and many more! The very rare 35mm print of Night of the Living Dead looked crisp and sounded clear. Romero’s movie played as well as it always has with it’s stark imagery and social commentary carrying resonance even for today’s turbulent times.
MVP enjoyed another unforgettable night at the movies courtesy of the Carolina Theatre and Retrofantasma. If you are in the Raleigh/Durham area and you haven’t been attending the Retrofantasma shows – then you don’t know what you are missing. The Mutantville Players would like to thank Jim and the Carolina Theatre for allowing us to show our little movie in such a spectacular setting. We feel truly honored and blessed to have shared this moment with all of you.
