It comes as little surprise to long time Mutantville Players to hear that Clive Barker is Streebo’s favorite horror storyteller. Clive Barker’s work was an influence on me long before I ever realized that I was a true fan and horror geek. Perhaps this influence started with Hellraiser II: Hellbound as I was lucky enough to join a friend who had advance passes to see the movie in the theater.
Hellraiser II: Hellbound would mark only my second venture into horror at the movies and boy did I pick a crazy movie as my sophomore viewing. My mind was simply overwhelmed by the mix of occult madness, flayed villains, otherworldly Cenobites and a near endless variety of unpleasant people committing atrocities on themselves and others. I did not know then but from that moment on I was irrevocably hooked on horror.
Later that same year, I would finally see the original Hellraiser on VHS at a friend’s house. Despite the fact that there is less time spent in the otherworld in Barker’s directorial effort – I found Hellraiser to be much more disturbing than it’s sequel. The perverse love triangle between Julia, Frank and Larry AND the Cenobites if you want to take it that far got under my skin in a way that standard stalk and slash fare could not. The body mutilation and the S&M subculture that is seen in the film also represented a darker set of desires for Barker’s characters than that of the typical teenage babysitter fare.

John Carpenter at the Fright Night Film Fest 2011.
I never realized how much of an influence John Carpenter was on my worldview growing up. He was responsible for so many of my favorite childhood movies – Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, Starman and so many more. It wasn’t until I became a dedicated horrorphile that I realized John Carpenter was responsible for those movies and oh so many more of my favorites in the horror genre. Halloween, The Fog, Christine, The Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth of Madness and so many other undeniable horror classics came from his directorial hand.
As a fan and certified horror geek – I knew that Carpenter’s movies shone with greatness but it wasn’t until we started Mutantville Productions in the winter of 2003 – that I began to look at horror films with a more critical eye. I suddenly realized that Carpenter’s works were not only the work of a true auteur – but the work of inspired genius.

“Personally I like the slow burn; I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. When I think about the movies that were most effective on me as a viewer I think of the original Haunting and the Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, the Sixth Sense, the Others. These movies are not over the top at all, they are movies that rely on good story telling, good acting, good premise, good exposition and I want to stay true to that in future projects. ”

J.J.Abrams has been doing press junkets to get the word out on his splended filmmaking kids on an adventure throwback flick 0 Super 8. In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting.com, he dropped an interesting metaphor for how he understood the importance of the human element in a movie like Super 8.
“There’s a stupid thing that I do sometimes when I’m doodling, which I’m always doing, which [is] I draw like a circle, and then I…shade it, and draw a little horizon line so it goes from just being this circle to being a…three-dimensional [object]“, he began.
“But then…whenever I draw a little figure next to it of a certain size, maybe very small, suddenly that circle…becomes this thing of scale. It’s weird how suddenly… there’s an importance to it, only because of the person, the figure that’s standing there. There’s a weird thing that happens, when you connect a person to an event…Suddenly the event has [a] different meaning.”

Mutantville Productions would like to take a moment to show our support to the good people at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. Apparently, they were afflicted by the modern scourge of the movie theater – the self important smart ass girl that likes to text and use the internet during a movie. Well, the fine employees did what every self respecting theater should do and they threw the little brat out the door!
Bravo, Alamo Drafthouse. If MVP had the authority to throw texting twits out during the movies we would have done the same thing. Alamo Drafthouse, we salute you!
