Haters Gotta Hate and Crabs Don’t Like to See Successful Crabs!
Couldn’t really come up with a cool image for this. Of course I thought about the Chappelle Show characters for the Haters’ Ball…but that wasn’t very “horror” related. This week I decided to talk about mindset and what I see going on with fans/a lot of the population.
Years ago I heard a story about someone that would go catch crabs with family and they would take a shallow basket to put the crabs in. It sounds odd but apparently that’s all you need. The trick is you have to have a minimum of two crabs in the basket. If there is only one crab it will notice that it can get out and proceed to get out. If you have more than one crab, the others will pull the escaping crab back into the basket. This seems to happen with people as well. If someone is doing well, trying something new or following their dreams…people will tell them they can’t do it or they are crazy for trying it. For artists, this is highly frustrating because we see our visions clearly and want to work towards them. Others just tell you that it can’t be done.
To me this comes down do mindset. Some people have a mindset of scarcity, others have an abundance mentality. I think this is kind of funny in the film business because of the final product. If a movie cost $100 or $200 million to produce the DVD usually cost what? About 20 bucks. Also look at it like this. If you buy DVDs, do you own just one DVD? I really doubt it. If you rent DVDs, do you rent one per year or one per lifetime? No, we rent movies or buy movies all the time. So what is the point of being so negative towards other filmmakers, etc…?

The Faculty Invades Scary Movie Saturday!
“Six students are about to find out their teachers really are from another planet.”
The 1990′s were a strange time for horror fans. As the 80′s drew to a close, Freddy Krueger crossed over into mainstream pop culture and in his wake there was a horror glut as everyone tried to make horror more marketable to the mainstream masses. The glut lead to disinterest on the part of the general public.
Horror films were watered down (see Wes Craven’s battles with the MPAA over Shocker) and quietly faded into the background. There were a few gems here and there such as Near Dark, In the Mouth of Madness, Candyman, and Lord of Illusions but it wasn’t until Scream revitalized the genre in 1996 that horror became the center of mainstream attention again. The impact of Scream on horror has been well discussed here on Mutantville so there’s no need to go too deep into it again.

Brinke Stevens, John Carpenter, ConCarolinas & Fright Night in MVP Sights!
This is Streebo, your resident Doctor of Horror, and I’m back with another Mutantville Monday update!
Join us at ConCarolinas on June 3rd at 7pm for a special screening of Respawner the Web Series Pilot episode. Come out and show your support for fantasy, science fiction and horror with MVP. Special guests at ConCarolinas include MVP, Ghost Trek and Brinke Stevens. BRINKE STEVENS!!! If that doesn’t make your toes curl then you’re no friend of mine!
Looking for news on G.H.O.S.T. – then check out the latest post-production v-log:
And here’s out latest update from over the weekend as we prepared the underscore for Scarecrow At Midnight in the hopes to have the final score ready for viewing at ConCarolinas. Scarecrow At Midnight will be screened as part of the film festival that weekend along with Michael Sharpe’s Monomaniacal and other fantastic entries.
In the world of horror, fans are gearing up for the new release from John Carpenter – The Ward – which hits theaters on July 8th! MVP is planning a trip to Kentucky for this year’s awesome Fright Night Film Festival with none other than the Master of Horror himself – John Carpenter. Be sure to check out our multi-part interview with Ken Daniels – promoter of Fright Night Film Fest and Fandom Fest:
True Blood season 4 is about to start this summer. Teaser vids have been hitting the internetz every week.
The truly bad ass Mortal Kombat Legacy vids are continuing to bloody the Internet. Be sure to check them out.
The sleeper supernatural thriller from James Wan – Insidious – is about to hit it’s DVD release date on July 12. The movie itself is still playing in some theaters. If you haven’t seen it yet – get out and watch what has been to this point the best horror release of 2011.
Rob Zombie is currently shooting his latest horror flick – Lords of Salem. Reports from the set say that it is very FX heavy. I’m glad to see Zombie going back to original works now so his work won’t be subjected to such idiotic scrutiny prior to it’s release as happened with his Halloween films. I still blame that idiot at AICN “Quint” for starting that snowball rolling with his moronic review of Zombie’s Halloween script. Yes, this is what’s called carrying a grudge. I keep bringing that crap up four years later. It was in effect the Gulf of Tonkin incident for Horror Fandom at which point the entire community’s head disappeared up it’s own ass. See my review “Rob Zombie’s Halloween is a Kick Ass Remake” for my thoughts on that frustrating time period in horror.

Scream 4 Screeches it’s way to Theaters this Weekend!

This week, horror fans from across the world have cause to celebrate as one of the most popular horror franchises of all time returns to the theaters for the first time in over ten years. Scream 4 by director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson returns to wreak havoc upon an unsuspecting populace. Be sure to line up early to get your tickets to what must surely be the only true horror event of the Spring season.
It is worth noting that the Spring season has often been less than hospitable to the horror genre. I recall a time when the entire internet was abuzz at the latest collaboration between hotshot directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez for a little movie called Grindhouse. Grindhouse was released Easter weekend in 2007, everyone talked about it, and then no one went to see it.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Scream 4 suffer the same fate. Horror fans are lazy and would often rather review a movie that they download illegally instead of paying hard earned cash to see a movie and then bitch about it like the old days. Ah, horror fans, what are we going to do with you?
Check back this weekend for MVP’s exclusive review of Scream 4. Get out to the theatre and see it for yourself. Come back and let us know what you think.
In other news, noted director Sidney Lumet passed away over the weekend. Lumet is well known for his work on films such as Serpico, The Wiz, Twelve Angry Men, and much more. The cinema will be a much darker place without him.
The creators of SAW, James Wan and Leigh Whannel, teamed to bring you another horror tale entitled Insidious. Insidious opened across the nation for a total box office of $27 million. With a production budget of less than $2 million, it is safe to say that James Wan will be bringing us more movies for years to come.
This week, Mutant TV brings you the trailers for the latest horror and sci-fi offerings playing at a theater near you. So put that Mountain Dew down, stop munching on Doritos and get your fat butt down to the theater to watch a movie. Get out and support the movies you want to see so they keep getting made.

Horror Etc. Discusses the fine art of “Horror/Comedy” this week.
The guys over at Horror Etc. are discussing the sub-genre of horror comedy this week. We’ve seen some great horror comedies over the years starting with Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein all the way up to Ghostbusters, Return of the Living Dead, Evil Dead II, FEAST, and SLiTHER! Pop over to the Horror Etc. website and listen to the new show or download the podcast mp3 and listen to it on the go.
From Horror Etc:
Come and join us as we walk the tightrope that is Horror Comedy this week. It’s a topic that has been long overdue considering that so many movies that fall within this unique subgenre of horror are personal favorites. Part of the difficulty is in articulating what works on an individual basis – comedy may be the most subjective genre form and once mixed with the varying tastes of horror fans, it can get to be tricky. We tossed out a quote in the show that sums it up nicely:
‘only a select few filmmakers can successfully tackle the complexity of mixing fear with laughter – if storytelling were science, then the scary / funny film is quantum physics’.
So we gave it our best shot to break down what has made certain attempts more successful than others and along the way gave attention to dozens of examples from the dawn of cinema to the modern era. By the way…have you seen The ‘Burbs? If not, why not?
We close things out with a recap of Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) – a high recommendation for fans of the slasher genre, a fine satire from a different perspective than Scream. Finally, some callouts to listeners to participate in the show, some peaks at the future of the podcast, some thanks to generous contributors and a bold step into the cutting edge technology of 2007. Thanks for listening!
