In honor of this weekend’s screening at Scarecrow at Midnight at the Killuride film festival at Myrtle Beach we’ve decided to feature a rare slasher gem from the golden age of slashers – the 80′s. This week it’s the little known The Slayer (1982) featuring a killer that would give Freddy Krueger a run for his money. I mention Craven’s creation for a reason because during the time period that Craven’s script for A Nightmare On Elm Street made the rounds through every studio in Hollywood – it was rejected by a certain studio which then promptly turned around and commissioned a script with elements lifted directly from Craven’s script. The tale would eventually be told as A Nightmare On Elm Street finally made it to the screen in 1984 thanks to New Line Cinema and The Slayer faded into little known obscurity.
We all remember scream queens like Jamie Lee Curtis, but who are some other scream queens? After doing a post recently on Cabin Fever, I thought I’d see what people think of Jordan Ladd. Many people are familiar with her mother Cheryl Ladd from the show Charlie’s Angels. In addition to Cabin Fever, Jordan was in the Death Proof part of Grindhouse and Hostel: Part II. She will be featured in the upcoming thriller, Murder on the 13th Floor which is due to release in 2012.
Pumpkinhead glow in the dark print from Cinema Overdrive.
We received our weekly update from Matt at Cinema Overdrive this past week and were pleasantly surprised to see that they have two new prints available for your edification. Horror geeks get ready to cream your shorts because this week Cinema Overdrive has not one – but TWO brand new prints for you based on the classic B-movies Alligator and Pumpkinhead. What better time to feature them than on a special edition of Collector’s Corner. Check out the prints after the leap.
In honor of our good friends at Exploited Cinema who first turned us on to Renny Harlin’s low budget debut Prison and who may in fact be nearing the end of their tenure as we know them. Change isn’t always a bad thing and is often required for more good to come so we wish Jdog and Bat32 nothing but success in their personal and professional lives. The boys had a greasy good ride and to that the Mutantville Players tip our hats. Thanks for keeping it greasy fellas.
Speaking of Renny Harlin and his low budget adventures, here’s a quote from wikipedia: Harlin moved to the U.S. where he was initially put to work directing low-budget horror movies, but commercial success was soon to follow. In 1988, Irwin Yablans of Empire Pictures hired him to direct Viggo Mortensen, Chelsea Field and Lane Smith in the low-budget horror film Prison filmed at a former state prison in Rawlins, Wyoming.[9] That same year Robert Shaye of New Line Cinema, after some initial doubts, hired him to direct another low-budget horror film, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, which became the highest grossing independent film at that time by earning $49 million in the US. Harlin cameos in the film as a student while a publicity poster for Prison can be seen in the background of a scene in a movie theatre.
The Charlotte Film Anarchists want you to show us what you're made of!
CHARLOTTE, NC — It’s hard to believe that the Charlotte Film Anarchists mastermind group has come together so quickly in the span of one week. The brainchild of Ghost Trek creator Michael Plumides and MVP maestro J.T.McRoberts, the CFA open group on Facebook already boasts over 750 members consisting of actors, directors, musicians, writers, and artists. The swell in support shows that the filmmakers in the area want to get together with others that are being proactive about making movies in the Charlotte area and beyond. This mastermind group will give everyone a chance to not only learn from others who have had success in the industry but to talk to their fellow filmmakers who are currently struggling to see how we can all help each other. The best part is that it won’t cost anyone a dime to attend.
Welcome back to another edition of Scary Movie Saturday aboard the Mothership. It’s been a busy week on the Mutantville Mothership as we’ve been working on so many projects that it becomes a real game of juggling to keep them all going. On top of shooting the first episode of Muticia’s Movie Morgue and finishing post on both the DVDs for G.H.O.S.T. and Tales From Mutantville we have kept the promotional train going with recent interviews with regional filmmakers such as Ken Comito and the Ghost Trek crew. I’m looking at a stack of indie horror movies that I’m reviewing this week and I thought you know what some of these would make great features for Scary Movie Saturday. And then I saw Party Girl and thought it was perfect. This is the indie flick for the grease fiend in you.

This week on Scary Movie Saturday we’re featuring a new release that we stumbled across on Youtube - We Need To Talk About Kevin. We Need To Talk About Kevin is currently making a limited theatrical run across the US. We’ve been hearing nothing but good things about We Need To Talk About Kevin ever since it hit the festival circuit this past year.
We Need To Talk About Kevin tells the story of Kevin’s mother as she struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.

Welcome back to Mutantville Mondays, oh faithful mutants. The Mutantville Mothership was abuzz with activity over the weekend as we made it through day one on the set of Muticia’s Movie Morgue Episode One: George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. We were able to shoot through thirteen scenes with countless setups over the course of the day on Saturday and we couldn’t be happier with the final results.
The footage looks spectacular and we’re sure that you will all enjoy what you see. The first hurdle has been cleared so we’re setting our sights on the next one. Join us again in two weeks on Sunday April 15th for Zombie Day on the set of Muticia’s Movie Morgue. We’ll be putting an undead horde of zombies to work on the set that day so make sure you don’t miss it.
Thank you all for making this weekend’s shoot so special. It was one of the smoothest and most fun shoots we’ve had at the Mutantville Productions Studios in ages. Enjoy your rest this week and spend some quality time with your family.
We’ll see you all in two weeks for Zombie Day! Spread the word. Join the fun. Keep it MVP.
