Nightbreed Cabal Cut revealed at Mad Monster Party 2012!

Nightbreed: Cabal Cut revealed at Mad Monster Party 2012.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Admist a weekend that saw Lo Pan rise from the dead surrounded by a bevy of gyrating half naked women, and everything from Doctor Scream’s Midnight Spookshow Revival to a Film Festival comprised of forty films and a guest list comprised of everyone from Ace Frehley to Brad Dourif and Rutger Hauer – the highlight of the convention for many fans was the special one time only screening of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed: Cabal Cut.

Since many fans – myself included – couldn’t make it to the show we have an update for you that will fill you in on how it all went. MVP was busy with the film festival through the entire runtime of Nightbreed: Cabal Cut and could not see the movie. Correspondent Roy Batty was on hand and witnessed everything that Cabal had to offer.

Nightbreed Director’s Cut to Screen at Mad Monster Party this March!

Nightbreed Director's Cut to Screen at Mad Monster Party this March!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLIVE BARKER’S (3 HOUR!) NIGHTBREED DIRECTOR’S CUT AT MAD MONSTER PARTY!

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, one of the most fan adored monster movies of all time is available for the first time in a never before seen 3 hour long director’s cut at the Mad Monster Party on Saturday March 24th, 2012. In addition to this special rare event Nightbreed stars Craig Sheffer and Anne Bobby (marking their very first convention appearance) will be in attendance for a Q&A
session following the screening and will be signing autographs in the dealer room throughout the weekend.

Mark Miller, Hellraiser comic writer, and Nightbreed expert will also be on hand to introduce the film on behalf of Clive Barker and share some insights into Barker’s vision for the future of Nightbreed.

Join Mad Monster Party to champion the cause and be a part of the growing movement to give the Director’s cut of this beloved film its much deserved special edition DVD/Blu-Ray release. We’re doing our part by sharing this cut and conducting panels which will explain the great opportunities fans will have to offer their support. Many thanks to Nightbreed distributor and owner Morgan Creek for giving us their blessing to show the film. They will be watching, with interest, for audience and fan reaction so let’s show them how much we want this to happen.

Once again, THIS VERSION HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. Pulling from three separate cuts of the film, and working closely with Nightbreed’s original director of photography Robin Vidgeon, Clive Barker’s team at Seraphim Films has assembled a composite that will be the most complete version of the film that has ever been shown.

Come show your support. As a work in progress, it is possible that you may never again get to see this version of Clive Barker’s masterpiece Nightbreed, as it was always meant to be seen.

Clive Barker’s Jericho on Scary Movie Saturday!

Clive Barker's Jericho (2007)

We’re changing gears slightly again this week as we focus not on a movie – but a video game. This is the last video game to bear Clive Barker’s name and although there was a planned sequel nothing has come of it meaning that Barker’s fans who want more video games from him will have to make do with Clive Barker’s Undying from 2002 and Jericho from 2007. Clive Barker’s Jericho tells the story of a black ops squad called Jericho consisting of a variety of sorcerous and psychic commandos and their battle to keep the demonic Firstborn from bursting through inter-dimensional gates into our world.

Sounds epic doesn’t it? Well it is epic! You get to play a variety of these black ops agents in what is best described as Gears of War meets Silent Hill on acid. It’s an endless assault from beginning to end and is powered by a great mythology laid out by Barker.

Clive Barker and the Uncanny Horror of Streeborama.

Nightbreed (1990)

It comes as little surprise to long time Mutantville Players to hear that Clive Barker is Streebo’s favorite horror storyteller.  Clive Barker’s work was an influence on me long before I ever realized that I was a true fan and horror geek.  Perhaps this influence started with Hellraiser II: Hellbound as I was lucky enough to join a friend who had advance passes to see the movie in the theater.

Hellraiser II: Hellbound would mark only my second venture into horror at the movies and boy did I pick a crazy movie as my sophomore viewing.   My mind was simply overwhelmed by the mix of occult madness, flayed villains, otherworldly Cenobites and a near endless variety of unpleasant people committing atrocities on themselves and others.  I did not know then but from that moment on I was irrevocably hooked on horror.

Later that same year, I would finally see the original Hellraiser on VHS at a friend’s house.  Despite the fact that there is less time spent in the otherworld in Barker’s directorial effort – I found Hellraiser to be much more disturbing than it’s sequel.  The perverse love triangle between Julia, Frank and Larry AND the Cenobites if you want to take it that far got under my skin in a way that standard stalk and slash fare could not. The body mutilation and the S&M subculture that is seen in the film also represented a darker set of desires for Barker’s characters than that of the typical teenage babysitter fare.

Christopher Young: Incredible Composer

Christopher Young - composer

Christopher Young - composer

This week we’re going to focus on the great film scores of Christopher Young. I’d have to say one of my favorite film scores is from Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser.” It’s just one of those sound tracks I can put on and listen to whether it is driving, working around the house, writing or some other creative process. There is just something about that score.

Christopher Young graduated from Massachusetts Hampshire College with a BA in music. He went on to do post graduate work at North Texas State University. Young was inspired by composer Bernard Herrmann, of Citizen Kane and Vertigo fame. He moved to Los Angeles and attended classes at UCLA where he studied with film composer David Raksin.
