The Worlds of Speculative Fiction Through the Eyes of Independent Filmmakers.

The Charlotte Film Anarchists will hold first meeting in May.
Welcome back to another weird and wild Monday on the Mutantville Mothership. It should go without saying by now that it’s been a busy weekend for the Mutantville Players. Post-production has been ongoing for several projects including G.H.O.S.T. and Tales From Mutantville and we are set to shoot the final scene for Muticia’s Movie Morgue tonight! Tonight’s shoot will be interesting as it features a live musical performance from Absolute Zero with band members Brent Bowers, Todd A. Britt and Jeremy Mullis. The biggest event of the weekend was the sudden announcement and subsequent launch of the filmmaking mastermind group the Charlotte Film Anarchists.
The Charlotte Film Anarchists is a group founded by Ghost Trek creator Michael Plumides and MVP co-founder J.T.McRoberts. The goal of the group is to provide Charlotte area filmmakers a chance to come together for a mastermind group once a month and talk to like minded individuals in the NC film industry. The Charlotte Film Anarchists is in no way meant to replace the existing group Charlotte Film Community – but rather to supplement it by giving actors and filmmakers that want to be more proactive a chance to meet and talk with others that have the same goals in mind.
What sets this group apart is the fact that there are no membership dues and no meetup fees. We are all struggling filmmakers that have to put so much of our own individual resources into our productions that at the end of the day it doesn’t always work out where we can scrounge up additional fees so we can simply meet and talk with our fellow filmmakers. Kill The Music author and Ghost Trek creator Michael Plumides started the ball rolling by finding a venue that would allow us to meet once a month to do our best to create positive proactive filmmaking partnerships.

Streeborama loves you.
Well it’s not exactly twenty questions but it’s the closest we’ve seen in a while. Here at long last is Grant Dean’s interview with the man the myth the internet sensation they call Streebo. J.T.McRoberts is one third of the men behind Mutantville Productions and Mutantville.com along with Geo Swanko and S. Brent Bowers. Here’s everything you wanted to know about MVP but were afraid to ask.
GD:Why the ‘’mutant’’ reference in your company moniker? A big Scifi fan?
JTM: When we first formed what would become Mutantville Productions in 2003, I came up with a long list of potential names for the studio. I wrote out probably fifty different names – almost all of them having something to do with mysticism or martial arts or the samurai or something like that. Almost as an afterthought the very last name I wrote was “Mutantville.” Of course, when we’re going over the names – the one we gravitated towards was Mutantville. My partner in crime Brento (S.Brent Bowers) suggested “Mutantville Studios” but I knew right away that it had to be Mutantville Productions because then we could build the company taglines and myths around the initials “MVP” although that makes no sense because it should really be “M.P.”

Streebo duels Uncanny X-Men & Iron Fist scribe Matt Fraction at Heroes Con.
I am a big sci-fi, fantasy and horror fan but the root of the mutant obsession came straight from the X-Men. Chris Clairmont’s Uncanny X-Men was one of my favorite comics as a kid and doing homage to Marvel’s merry mutants made perfect sense to me. I always envisioned Mutantville as a company dedicated to all works of speculative fiction (as Harlan Ellison would say) – not just horror. Horror is simply the easiest genre to work with when working on a limited budget – or no budget as in our case. I do have scripts in the works for a superhero movie and also a sci-fi horror flick. Despite our tagline of “changing the face of independent horror,” we are dedicated to all the sub-genres of speculative fiction.

G.H.O.S.T. cast and crew gather for screening.
The Mutantville Players had another crazy weekend as we saw the fruits of two year’s worth of labor come to fruition. Saturday night while MVP was frantically working to complete work on the final cut of G.H.O.S.T. – another MVP project – Scarecrow At Midnight played across town at the Myers House NC Halloween Bash! Working through the night – MVP was able to get G.H.O.S.T. ready for the screening on Sunday.
Sunday all of our friends, filmmakers and fellow Players came out to celebrate the occasion with us by watching a program of horror including Michael Sharpe’s Deviling, Desdemona 6 from Last Call Pictures and MVP’s own G.H.O.S.T. Everyone came in costume and had an amazing time. There was plenty of beer, cheer and screams to go around.

Welcome back to Fridays with MVP, oh faithful Mutants. It’s been another wild and chaotic week on the Mutantville Mothership where we’ve been hard at work on several projects in various stages of productions including Muticia’s Movie Morgue, Indigo Child, Scarecrow At Midnight, Tales From Mutantville, The Metatron Files and G.H.O.S.T. In world horror news, Fright Night (2011) and Conan The Barbarian performed poorly at the box office while Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is poised to surprise everyone this weekend.

Scarecrow At Midnight premiered at the 12th Annual Nevermore Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on Saturday February 19th. The neo-modern scarecrow slasher flick played to a raucus crowd that seemed to yell and jump at all the right places. The film played as part of the short film block entitled “When the Stars Begin to Fall” and was accompanied by several fantastic shorts such as The Devil’s Toy, Davis, Last Seen on Delores Street, Written By, Murderabilia, and See The Dead.
Attendees of the premiere included writer/director J.T.McRoberts, star Katie Bearden, as well as several other members of the cast and crew such as Robert W. Filion, Julian Safrit, Janice Mitchell Wyatt, Meg Elliot, Lisa Cobb, Todd A. Britt, Meghan King, Brent Bowers, Geo Swanko, Coty Galloway, Jeremy Bonham and associate producer Jason Arispe. Kenny Caperton, proprietor of the Myers House NC, was also in attendance and was as thrilled as the rest of the cast to see the movie and his house on the big screen. According to the Carolina Theatre – attendance for the festival was estimated to have suprassed the previous year’s event.
The cast and crew roamed the halls of the Carolina Theatre talking to the fans and enjoying the Nevermore Festival. The cast raved about how much fun they had working on the film and the hilarity continued as the group goofed around after the premiere. Director J.T.McRoberts led everyone on a slasherthon to follow up on the terrors of Scarecrow At Midnight by then watching Friday the 13th and Silence of the Lambs in 35mm.
One fan stated that Scarecrow At Midnight reminded him of the classic Goosebumps tale The Scarecrow Walks At
Midnight, “except that it (Scarecrow At Midnight) was about a thousand times more terrifying.” Other compliments were passed along to the cast and crew on several aspects of the film from the performances of the cast to the quality of the special make-up effects. Director J.T. McRoberts stated that “having the opportunity to have our movie play at this festival was a dream come true and to have the crowd react in such a positive manner makes it all worth it. This is the only reward a filmmaker needs and I would like to thank the Carolina Theatre for making it possible.”
Scarecrow At Midnight will be available along with the other shorts Indigo Child, Family Fiend, Devil Comes Down, and Respawner the Web Series: Pilot Episode in the Tales from Mutantville anthology collection on DVD and Blu Ray this summer. Mutantville.com is proud to bring you this exclusive look at the official one sheet for Mutantville Productions’ first release from the Tales From Mutantville collection – Scarecrow At Midnight. Early versions of the poster were revealed last week.
Writer/director J.T. McRoberts commented that “we worked very hard to come up with a design that would both engage the eye and relay the story of Scarecrow At Midnight all at once. I’m fortunate to work with a designer as talented as Brent Bowers who has the technical ability to bring my ideas to life. Brent enjoyed working on the poster so much that he continued tinkering with the initial design and came up with the mosaic idea that incorporated every single character in the movie in the image.”
