Red State, The Ward and Apollo 18 on Fridays with MVP!

This weekend Kevin Smith’s Red State is available on VOD while John Carpenter’s The Ward has hit Blu Ray and Netflix and lastly we get a double punch of Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D playing in theaters across the nation.  The team at MVP are hard at work moving several projects through various stages of production and foresee a long weekend of work ahead.  There’s little time for updates so we’re going to share a few links with you then remind you to check out the Mutantville Productions Facebook fanpage and then let you enjoy yourself in the manner of your choosing.

KEVIN SMITH SCORES FOR INDEPENDENT FIILMMAKING!!!

Kevin Smith gets big props for not only financing his own movie with his horror effort Red State – but he gets major props for deciding to eschew the major studios and release the movie on his own.  MVP narrowly missed out on a chance to see Red State during it’s initial tour but now we – along with the rest of the world – can watch Red State from the comfort of our homes with VOD.  That’s Video On Demand for those of you that are still using rotary phones to communicate.

Kevin Smith states that he wrote Red State to showcase the talents of lead actor Michael Parks after he saw his performance in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s From Dusk Til Dawn.  If you haven’t seen Michael Parks’ performance in From Dusk Til Dawn then Youtube it now – and if you haven’t seen From Dusk Til Dawn you need to Netflix it now.  The rest of you can check out the trailer to Red State below.

This weekend also sees a head to head battle at the box office between the space Gothic horror film Apollo 18 and the animals attack party flick Shark Night 3DApollo 18 tells the story of the final secret mission to the moon – Apollo 18 – and what it encountered that made NASA decide they would never go back.  Shark Night 3D tells the story of a group of friends partying at the lake when they are attacked by a swarm of sharks.

THE MASTER OF HORROR RETURNS!!!

John Carpenter returned after a ten year hiatus from theaters with his low budget effort The Ward.  Carpenter explained at the Fright Night Film Fest that he came back to directing horror because of his positive experience making the Masters of Horror show with Mick Garris.  Carpenter liked the idea behind The Ward and that it was a small self contained story that he could execute in a manner true to his guerrilla filmmaking roots.  While Carpenter seemed less than pleased at the studios lack of promotion of the film he does note that he was pleased to work with his first all female cast.

This weekend truly offers something for everyone.  Horror is not dead or on life support but far from it.  You can find it on Netflix, on your television and on the big screen, so get out and enjoy it while it lasts.
