Looking at Speculative Fiction from Another Dimension.

Oblivion (2013) with Tom Cruise obliterates Trailer Park Tuesday.

Oblivion (2013)

I’ve never been the world’s biggest Tom Cruise fan. In fact – I once heard a first hand story of the time he was eating at a restaurant at Myrtle Beach when a diner nearby began violently choking on his food. Out of the entire restaurant – Tom Cruise was the only one to stop eating and run over to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the choking man – effectively saving his life. So in my book – Tom is probably a pretty cool guy. Aside from the MI movies or his cameo in the instant comedy classic Tropic Thunder – his movie role choices have been pretty piss poor and uninteresting over the past few years. Oblivion looks like a different story – in fact it looks like a really neat ripoff of the Matrix. If you’re going to rip something off – there are worse places to start than the Matrix.

Check out the trailer after the leap!

From the Press Release:
Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth.

Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands. Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.
