Technically a Glidecam and not a Steadicam

Over a year ago I created a post on how to build a Steadicam and it has done well. With cameras getting smaller and more people going the way of digital SLR, I thought we’d explore some new ways to make a Steadicam (or Steadicam type rig). The first video is the first steadicam rig that I ever built years ago. It worked well for what it is. Obviously there is no form of math that lets $30 = $4000 and up. So the results don’t match either…but it helps get rid of some of that handheld shakiness.

If you know me then you are aware that I’m a big Martin Scorcese fan. So here is a steadicam shot from the camera operators point of view. This is pretty amazing because of all the choreography. Notice how the actors move in time and how the furniture is moved, then a wall is moved, the the furniture is moved back and the lighting is dimmed. Very awesome!

This next one looks cool. Looks like a lot of designs combined. He uses a lot of already made items which is cool if you don’t have a big shop full of tools and gadgets.

Here is an interesting steadicam that is made of PVC. It’s mainly for Digital SLRs but any small camera could fit.

The video below is the easiest one to make. It involves things that a lot of us already have sitting around. It’s not the best but I know that I’ve used a tripod for moving shots in a pinch when I didn’t have the other steadicam I made.
