George A. Romero honored as Inspirational Filmmaker of the Month!

It was 1968.  George A. Francis Ford Coppola makes Inspirational Filmmaker of the Week

Francis Ford Coppola set the mold for what an independent filmmaker should be.  Over thirty years ago, he gathered together a group of his friends, grabbed the best cameras and technology that he could find, found money wherever he could and set out to create his movies – his way.  Francis started his career with a guiding hand from Roger Corman and in turn helped launch the careers of many a young filmmaker such as john Milius and George Lucas.

Kevin Smith voted MVP’s Inspirational Filmmaker of the Week!

The saga of Kevin Smith and Red State started almost 20 years ago with the release of a little black and white film called Clerks.  This week, Kevin Smith made his triumphant return to Sundance film festival and to his status as a true “independent filmmaker” (in his own words) when he screened his new horror film Red State for receptive audiences at Sundance.  To everyone’s surprise – Smith decided to turn down offers from studios and go it alone.  He will take Red State out on a road show across the country and show it to the people without benefit of advertising and the other expensive overhead incurred by the big studios.  Kevin Smith’s decision to self-distribute his horror film Red State earns him the distinction of being MVP’s Inspirational Filmmaker of the Week!  You can learn about his reasoning for this decision here and find out if Red State is coming to your town by clicking here.

MVP’s Inspirational Filmmaker of the Week: Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi didn’t start out at the top directing three of the highest grossing blockbusters of all time with Spiderman.  He started at the very bottom going door to door with his aspiring actor buddy Bruce Campbell, asking dentists to invest their Vegas money in a little project called “Book of the Dead.”  That obscure project went on to become one of the most lauded horror films of the eighties and helped start the entire video nasty craze in England under the more well known name of “Evil Dead.”

Check out this great clip from Jonathan Ross’ Incredibly Strange Film Show as Raimi discusses the horror roots of his filmmaking career.

Dario Argento’s Suspiria

Dario Argento’s film “Suspiria” is one film I always remember from my crash course in horror films from Streebo. During pre-production, production, post production of “C for Chaos”(and even now), Streebo has educated me on horror from around the globe. While filming we would sometime let me be really intense with the colored light. He would often cite “Suspiria” as a source of inspiration. So I was looking around and thought I’d provide some information about the film to those that may not be familiar with it or those wanting to hear other’s opinions.

An Interesting Take on Film: Susperia

Susperia, directed by legendary Italian horror director Dario Argento, is the first film in the Three Mothers trilogy along with Inferno (1980) and La Terza Madre (2007). Argento, along with Goblin who wrote the musical score, …

Horror Movie Review of Suspiria: Stylish and beautiful fright delight.

Suspiria is considered by many to be the best work ever by Dario Argento. The use of lighting, camera angles, close-up and music (performed by The Goblins with input from Argento himself) create a sinister and surreal shroud of dread …

Full Moon Reviews – Horror, Sci-Fi, Action, B-Movies: Suspiria (1977)

He’s a great director but I don’t think any reimagining will match the 1977 masterpiece that is Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA. If you haven’t seen this horror classic for some reason, take a chance on it and watch it more than once. …

What’s one of yr favourite horror movies? I’d have to choose a Dario Argento film like ‘Suspiria’ or ‘Tenebrae’…
