MVP at the ConCarolinas Indie Filmmaking Panel.
This week on the Indie Filmmaker Spotlight we are featuring a panel from ConCarolinas 2011. The Mutantville Players were honored to be a part of a panel that featured not only legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens, but local filmmakers such as Christine Parker, Michael Ray Williams, Robert W. Filion, and Jaysen Buterin of Mad Ones Films. Topics discussed included everything from filmmaking to networking to how to promote in the digital age. We had some technical difficulties which delayed this video in post but we decided to go ahead and share it with you all anyway.

John Carpenter at the Fright Night Film Fest 2011.
I never realized how much of an influence John Carpenter was on my worldview growing up. He was responsible for so many of my favorite childhood movies – Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, Starman and so many more. It wasn’t until I became a dedicated horrorphile that I realized John Carpenter was responsible for those movies and oh so many more of my favorites in the horror genre. Halloween, The Fog, Christine, The Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth of Madness and so many other undeniable horror classics came from his directorial hand.
As a fan and certified horror geek – I knew that Carpenter’s movies shone with greatness but it wasn’t until we started Mutantville Productions in the winter of 2003 – that I began to look at horror films with a more critical eye. I suddenly realized that Carpenter’s works were not only the work of a true auteur – but the work of inspired genius.

The Mutantville Players had the honor of meeting John Carpenter at the recent Fright Night Film Fest in Kentucky. We made the eight hour plus trip out to Louisville to talk to one of our filmmaking idols and one of the true Masters of Horror and it was well worth it. Carpenter has largely been absent from the horror world over the past decade – appearing long enough to participate in the Masters of Horror experiment on Showtime and also acting as a consultant for the F.E.A.R. series of video games on XBOX – so fans such as myself are happy to see him out promoting his latest effort The Ward at conventions and festivals across the country.
On Saturday at the event, Carpenter accepted questions directly from the crowd and MVP was there. No need to worry if you couldn’t make the trip – we’ve recorded it and uploaded it to the Mutantville Players Youtube account for you to enjoy. So – enjoy!

The Mutantville Players were on hand this weekend to witness John Carpenter accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fright Nigh Film Fest in Kentucky. The Master of Horror was honored for a lifetime of dedication to the horror genre as well as for creating such classic works as Halloween, In The Mouth of Madness, Christine, Escape From New York, Big Trouble In Little China, and most recently Cigarette Burns.
We took plenty of pictures and shot tons of interview footage of the event. We chatted with everyone from Jim Kelly to Larry Drake to Addy Miller to a certain man named John . . . Carpenter that is.
MVP would like to send out a big round of thanks to promoter Ken Daniels and Myra Daniels and their crew for putting on not just one – but TWO great shows this year with the Fright Night Film Fest and Fandom Fest. There were a lot of things that happened that were out of their control like the loss of air conditioning and shortage of tables at the convention center but they dealt with it with equanimity and made this past weekend the best con on the East coast so far for 2011!
Videos are forthcoming.
